Some compromises, good overall
Pros
Low price, high quality image, good range of controls, very little reflection from screen.
Cons
Some connectors are at the back, some on the left side. Not always convenient.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
If size and aspect ratio are OK for your use, this is a better than average unit at a lower than average price.
I purchased this TV to replace a 12 year old 25" GE. Price was important, and this was the cheapest HDTV I could find that fit the narrow space I had available for it that I liked.
I first plugged it into the same connections as the old TV (coax cable from satellite tuner). It was much sharper than the old TV, but had several vertical 'shimmering' lines. An S-TV cable upgrade took care of that. It had a slight pinkish tint at the lower right at first, but by the time a few hours went by it had disappeared.
Sound was much improved over the old TV, easier to make out mumbled speech, etc. It has a sort of 'boomy' sound, though. Fair control over sound characteristics through presets (speech, movie, music, standard) and better control with an equalizer setup in the menu.
It has the usual (color, contrast, brightness, sharpness, tint) color controls as well as some presets. For the most part I found one set of adjustments was sufficient for most sources, though some movies do look better with the presets.
The basic quality of the image is quite good -- not up to a Sony (that cost twice as much) but equal, IMO, to that of a Panasonic and better than a Phillips. There are some occasions when there are distortions evident from the circuitry -- one film had a woman's face, on an angle, nodding her head and there was some distortion in the movement of her nose (brief, and not visible in other scenes). I have seen this in some other HDTV's as well, and I don't know how common it is, but one should be ready for it. Some mens' ties also get the rainbow effect -- again, I don't know if the failure shows up in this TV or in HDTV's generally.
My setup has the TV right next to a window, and reflections during daytime watching were a problem with the old TV. The Samsung has some kind of coating on the screen to reduce those reflections, and it works.
The 'universal' remote is limited in its control my satellite box (no surprise there). Some of the defaults are poorly chosen (the default is for a funny sound to play when the TV is turned on or off, for example).
