The Bottom Line:
I found installation easy and performance to be excellent. 30-day money back guarantee from 3M makes this device worth trying.
I have just installed this device and want to give my first impression. I will add to this review after I have more experience with it.
Installation on a Windows XP system was simple: plugged it into a USB port with computer off, turned computer on, then waited about 30 longer than normal after bootup (while computer apparently recognized device). I left my standard mouse plugged into a different USB port and both devices work. I mouse with my left hand (though I am right handed), so I plan to alternate between the two devices to alleviate stress on my wrists. The Ergonomic Optical Mouse is intended for right-hand use only. I tried it with my left and the positioning is *not* ergonomic in the left hand.
In my right hand, the positioning is a very natural handshake position. Just as with a regular mouse, the cursor is moved around the screen by sliding the device around the desktop. I first tried the device on a plain desktop, but the tracking was erratic. Placing it on an optical mousing pad solved that problem. A single button on the top serves as a left or right mouse click by pressing that button to the left or to the right. The click is positive and from the start I have not had any problems mis-clicking.
The instructions say it takes about 3 weeks to get fully accustomed to using the device. I found that I was comfortable with it by my third click. It is very easy to use.
The instructions offer a 30 day money back guarantee. I quote the manual, "We are confident you will thoroughly enjoy the comfort of this mouse. If you don't, return it within 30 days from your purchase date in its original package and with the original sales receipt to the following address and 3M will refund your purchase price. Call 1-800-332-7483 for return authorization and then mail to 3M Post Sales Support Center, 2100 Wilson Ave, St Paul MN 55119."
For anyone experiencing wrist or hand pain while mousing, this device it worth trying (assuming that your productivity at the computer is worth more than the price of the mouse).
