The Bottom Line:
The fully warranted for $25000, Surge Arrest Notebook surge protector can not only protect your computer but your phones as well all for a few dollars investment.
Laptops and portable projectors need just as much electrical protection as high-end rack mount servers and networking equipment. In the past this was not possible without carrying around a bulky surge protector strip. Today we have the APC P1T to protect our valuable equipment.
The P1T protector comes in a 6.5" x 5.75" protective, laminated, plastic shell with the product safely enclosed inside. Inside you will find a 2" wide x 3" high x 1.25" deep, single outlet, black plastic wall plug. On the bottom are three RJ-11 ports, two output and one input.
The APC P1T has two bright LED's that are on the top of this unit to notify you if it is grounded and if you are protected. According to the instructions, it also has a thermal fuse which I hope you never find out if works. A 6' RJ-11 phone cord is included to help you get a phone protected quickly after purchase.
Warranty
I was very impressed to find that the APC P1T surge protector has a $25,000 lifetime product warranty. If your properly connected equipment is ever damaged by an AC surge, including surges due to lighting, APC will replace their product and at their option repair or reimburse the fair market value of the connected equipment (valid in the US and Canada only).
In order for you to meet the properly connected equipment clause, I highly recommend only plugging in equipment with less than 150 watts of continuous power consumption. For example, a laptop power supply and a cordless 900 Mhz phone would be just about it. On the other hand, connecting this to your office phone system would be perfect because if you still use analog phone lines it could surge protect those as well and keep the whole system under the APC SurgeArrest warranty.
Summary
We all fear the day a sudden surge takes out your valuable office equipment. The most troubling part of replacing equipment is learning how to use the new electronics again. I cannot count how many times I had to learn a new laser printer because an old one was zapped due to faulty wiring at my old, poorly funded, software company. We would often have to spend 4 hours on an afternoon reconfiguring our desktops to use the new printer. Four hours of a software developers time can easily cost a company hundreds if not thousands of dollars in today’s competitive society.
