This is fun
Pros
Truly international, excellent reception, clear calls, well made, good for light browsing
Cons
New model in pipeline (current model lacks HSDPA, videocalling and Windows Mobile 6).
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
If you travel internationally and want reliable phone and internet communication you ought to have one. You might want to wait for new model though.
UPDATE In discussions with AT&T they claim 8525 has HSDPA upgrade. Will add to review when I get back to US and can check this out.
I bought my 8525 in San Francisco 2 weeks back. I had tried to decide between it and Treo in NY and WI but neither store had anyone who had a clue what they were talking about. San Francisco store had staff who really knew the products.
It makes good calls in weak and strong signal areas, it switches 3G to GSM and back without call loss, it does not stick with 3g in bad reception areas. Speaker and ring are nice and loud.
Internet performance is good on 3G and acceptable on Edge.
I have used successfully in US on 3G and GSM/Edge, in UK on 3G and GPRS and in Mexico on Edge. Screen is fine for me for mails and news/finance/sport. Too small for fine detail work but heh that is what your laptop is for.
Intuitive interface, if you want to change something you click on it. I like the stylus sliding into unit, it feels secure. Also I like the slider for keyboard. I am 6'5" with fairly big fingers and it works fine for me, much better than my blackberry. Illuminated keyboard is a bonus when you are using in back of car etc.
Camera is fine, took pictures at party in bar with very acceptable results and it was very easy to email. With other cellphones I have had problems downloading pictures, as MMS does not work well internationally or across carriers.
I really like the standby switch which leaves the unit on but deactivates screen and keyboard. I ditched my Nokia N80 which used to dial calls in my pocket.
So overall I am really pleased. Almost the same feeling as when I first got a cell in the 1980's. Big Bonus for me is it is international. So many pdas and smartphones assume you will never leave US or Europe or if you do that GPRS will do.
Last big win is you can dial using touch screen just as easily as regular phone, you do not have to use keyboard.
