Quiet, fast, a bit heavy, nicly styled external USB / ESATA drive.
Pros
Very quiet, fast, reliable, dense, capable, large capacity drive compatible with a DirecTV HR21 DVR.
Cons
The PureDrive runs hot, it must be in a ventillated area. No ESATA 2 cable.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
The PureDrive is a quiet, reliable, high capacity external hard drive with USB and ESATA 2 capability. It can run as an external drive to a DirecTV HR21 DVR.
The PureDrive 1 terabyte drive is an external hard drive with it's own power supply. Before use, it must be powered up by plugging into a wall power socket. A power supply is included with this device. The PureDrive is pre-formatted to the FAT32 standard, and can be used by almost any Operating System out of the box.
The PureDrive has 2 types of data connections, it's first connection is a USB 2 type. This will plug into about any computer and let you start to read and write a terabyte of data usually by just plugging the USB cable to the drive.
The second type of connector is an ESATA (External Serial ATA). This is a faster and more robust connection than USB. The box indicates the PureDrive is ESATA 1 compliant, in my direct experience it is ESATA 2 (sometimes listed as ESATA II) compliant. This means it moves data twice as fast as advertised.
Included in the box is an external drive enclosure (with 1 terabyte drive inside), an external power supply which converts 120 volt house power to the power required by the drive, and a USB 2 cable. There is NO ESATA 2 cable provided in the box. There is also a stand to mount the PureDrive vertically.
Upon power up, you'll notice that the PureDrive has no internal fan. This results in extremely quiet operation. My experience has been this drive is more quiet than most other external drives. If you want a quiet external drive, which makes just about no noise, this is the drive for you.
As a result of it's not having a fan, the PureDrive enclosure may get hot. It must be placed in a well ventilated area. This is NOT the sort of drive you want to put in a sealed shelf for example. Consideration for a well ventilated placement should be made prior to purchase.
The enclosure is dark plastic on the front and back, and a dark matte steel / anodized aluminum color on the side. Be careful when first picking the drive up, it is very dense and may fall out of your hands if you don't have a tight grip. On the front is an indicator light. This will usually be blue to indicate the drive is idle, but will switch to red when the drive is busy. Usually the busier the drive, the more it flickers between blue and red.
The PureDrive 1 terabyte has a bit of a secret, it is one of the few external drives which can be connected via an ESATA 2 cable directly to a DirecTV HR21 DVR. I use my PureDrive for this purpose. It extends my DVR's memory from its 320GB internal drive to a 1Tb external drive. The color scheme of the external drive is consistent with the DirecTV HR21 DVR series, as is the blue indicator light. As a result not only does the PureDrive work well as an external drive for this device, it is also aesthetically consistent with it. My PureDrive sits on top of my DirecTV HR21 DVR mounted with the included stand and looks great. I highly recommend this device if you are considering an external hard drive for a DirecTV HR21 DVR.
As a final note, if you are considering this drive to be an external drive for a DirecTV HR21 DVR you must be certain to acquire a good quality ESATA 2 cable. The first cable I purchased was the lowest priced cable, and it did not work with my PureDrive and DVR. My thought was the PureDrive wouldn't work with the DirecTV DVR, however on suggestion from a forum (dbstalk.com) I ordered a better quality cable and my drive immediately began to work with my HR21 DVR. This drive should also work with a DirecTV HR20 DVR, however I have no direct experience with this, only reports I've read elsewhere. This drive is not aesthetically compatible with most DirecTV HR20 DVR's, if aesthetics is a consideration then this drive is most appropriate as an external drive for a DirecTV HR21 DVR.
External drive capability is an undocumented feature of the DirecTV HR20 / HR21 DVR's. If you call DirecTV support they will deny it works at this time. Support for this drive with a HR20 / HR21 is available only from peers on public forums such as the dbstalk.com high definition DVR forum. Make certain you have a very good quality cable ordered with this device, and make certain you have an acceptable return policy if you are not very technical.
