About a month ago, I picked up one of Aiwa's AM-C80 portable minidisc recorders through JandR.com and I have to say that it is a definite competitor in today's minidisc market. I have not yet been let down by sound quality, craftsmanship, size, or battery consumption. However, because I purchased the AM-C80, I did not receive a lithium ion battery with my purchase. This is a problem because they are not normally carried at electronics/battery stores and must be ordered from the manufacturer. I currently have one on order and am waiting to receive it; until then, I have to use the included external battery pack, which plugs into the 4.5 vDC socket and takes 3 AA batteries. I would not recommend getting this unit if you do not plan on purchasing the lithium ion battery. Anyway, enough of my petty problems, let's get on with the review.

All of these features make the Aiwa AM-C80 some very tough competition to the other higher priced minidisc recorders out there *ahem* sony *ahem*. Though it is not the smallest, lightest, or even the highest quality MD recorder out there, its features pulled together pack a strong wallop and makes the AM-C80 quite a good value in the electronics market. I think, however that Aiwa should have included a lithium-ion battery and at least one minidisc to let you start recording as soon as you get it. Though the initial purchase price for this unit is relatively low, Aiwa makes you go out and spend up to an extra $50-70 on the battery and minidiscs. Hopefully Aiwa will consider including some of these essential items the next time they release a new portable minidisc recorder. Overall, I personally think that this is a good unit and I would recommend other people to purchase one.
