The Bottom Line:
Don't buy the Aiwa AM-F80. Why? Would you buy a product that breaks after 2 months and that the Aiwa trained technicians could offer no solution to?
I had considered buying a MD player for some time and was for some time put off by the cost, lack of music available to buy in the MD format and the fact that my hi-fi amplifier did not have an optical output.
When my old amplifier gave up on me I invested in a brand new unit complete with optical/digital output and as the store where I purchased my amp had a sale on at the time I also splashed out on the Aiwa AM-F80.
Initially I looked at the Sony units as I had heard good things about them from friends and from staff at hi-fi stores. However, the design, features and price of the Aiwa unit (#100 - #60 discount from the TSP), and the fact that I had enjoyed long and quality service from my previous Aiwa purchases (CD player and turntable) influenced my choice.
I found the unit aesthetically pleasing and it also came with a good range of peripherals including fibre-optic lead, carrying bag, re-charger, additional battery pack and remote control. The AM-F80 has excellent recording abilities off the fibre optic cable and a synchronous-start function that automatically starts the recording process when input is detected. The anti-jog mechanism (40 seconds memory) is sufficient for anyone's needs (unless you're going to take it on the Paris-Dakar Rally).
BUT! And this is a big but! After 2 months of trouble-free recording, playback and normal use I left the AM-F80 to recharge for a couple of hours and upon my return discovered that the screen was displaying the message "NO ADJ!" And the screen on the remote read "NO ADJUST!" Looking through the user's manual I could find no reference to this error message. I tried the "reset" function, but this made no difference. I performed some research online and found that several people had come across the "NO ADJ!" error. I took the unit back to the store from which I had bought it and one of the sales representatives contacted the local Aiwa centre on my behalf. However, they were unable to offer any solution or remedy to the problem.
