A Cheap Jukebox For Your Car

Pros Great sound, MP3 & WMA support, ease of use
Cons Bright display (no dimmer), small buttons, useless remote
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  In conclusion, if you are looking for a low to mid range CD deck that plays MP3 CDs to replace your system, check this out.
I decided to replace the tape deck that came with my car with a CD player. My decision was between an in-dash player and a changer. I finally decided on getting an in-dash player since I like its convenience. I was looking for a low-end CD player (around $200) that will play MP3 encoded CDs.

After installing this deck, I tested this with 3 different CDs. The first was a store purchased CD, the second, a CD-R mix CD I burned, and the third being a MP3 CD with folders. This deck played the three CDs with no problems. Considering I'm using factory speakers and no amp, the sound is suprisingly rich and detailed. Granted, my expectation with car audio is fairly low considering the environment.

I have now used this deck for a week now and I'm still enjoying it. While it is not very convienient to search through a MP3 CD, it is not a concern for me since I play the disc on random. I have not encountered any skips through my driving.

A couple of things are disappointing to me. One, the buttons are incredibily small. If you drive with winter gloves, you will need to remove them before operating this. Two, there is no way to alter the display illumination. At night, the set display is too bright. Finally, this deck comes with a remote that could be attached to the steering wheel. While it is a great idea, it does not work consistently. The reason for this is that the remote is IR based and not RF, thus requiring line of sight.

In conclusion, if you are looking for a low to mid range CD deck that plays MP3 CDs to replace your factory system, this should be on the top of your list.
