Silky smooth sound with great bass, crisp highs, and user friendly EQ adjustment
Cons
no auto reverse or music scan on cassette decks
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
This is an excellent sounding system featuring very crisp and clear highs and deep tight bass.
At the beginning i would like to correct a mistake by a prior reviewer. 1) this unit does not have a weather band. 2)It also has no music calendar.
I am a seasoned musician who has a very good and sensitive ear for audio frequencies, so you can imagine that I am pretty hard to please when it comes to audio equipment performance. I have spent the last few months comparing many mini systems side by side in various stores and in my home. The NSX-D70 is one of the the best sounding, best looking, and most user friendly unit I have seen so far. The bass, midrange and treble are easily adjustable by remote and with each adjustment you are shown a visual graphic readout of each setting which is an incredibly great feature if you are serious about your sound reproduction. Here's how the EQ works....there are individual adjustments from -5db to 5db on bass, midrange, and treble which can be effected either by remote or directly on the control panel itself. That's a wide range of EQ possibilities at the press of a button! As I sit here at the computer, if CD or song on the radio comes on that I want to adjust, I just aim the remote, press a button, and instantly see the current EQ graph. At the press of one more button I can go from bass to midrange to treble, make the necessary adjustments(-5 to 5), and see visually how each one effects the overall EQ image. This is an incredibly effecient and useful feature for any stereo.. at any price.. and AIWA should be applauded for this. I currently have the bass up at 5 and the midrange down to -3 which produces a very deep subwoofer effect which is very nice. The great thing about this is that you can tailor your sound to fit your own personal preferences at the touch of a button.
If you like deep bass while at the same time hearing the acoustic guitars and cymbals and percussion very clearly then you should definitely give this a listen. A good way to hear the finer qualities of this unit is to listen to a song by Sade such as "Is it a Crime?". The breathiness of her voice, the distinctiveness of the percussion instruments, and the acoustic qualities of the piano really come through nicely and are very impressive to the sensitive ear.
I have recently compared this unit side by side to the JBL SG2020 and the JBL sounds like a tabletop radio compared to the AIWA. It has much more EQ adjustments than the Aiwa models below it(NSX-D30 etc), and the difference is a striking one.
In closing, if you're the kind of person who likes crystal clear highs, and tight deep bass you should give this unit a listen.
Update 08/13/03- This product has been discontinued by Aiwa but you can still buy them online at a few sites including Ebay. Get one before they're gone.
