Aiwa NSX- DS11, looks bad, costs too much

Pros Dolby Digital
Cons DD with no sub, explain that? also the price is too high
Recommended it? Yes
What were the people at Aiwa thinking when they designed the Aiwa NSX-DS11?

The Looks
Have you ever seen anything uglier? It looks like they had a bunch of spare parts lying around the Aiwa (Sony) factory and they used those to design a stereo. If you disagree with my analysis, I would like to refer to the Newsweek article on beauty. Basically Newsweek defines beauty by having symmetry in one's face which is why Densel Washington is sooooo good looking and why Lyle Lovett (sp?) is not very handsome. Yes I realize this is a stereo and people are different, but really folks, this thing is ugly. You can also read ronaldyang?s ?sounds as bad as it looks? article (Jan 6 '00) if you do not like what I?m saying.

The Price
I did a real quick search and found that as of today the Aiwa NSX-DS11 costs $489.95 at www.wholesaleproducts.com. That?s almost five Benjamins!!!! I?m not saying $500 for a stereo is too much to pay, I?m just saying $489.95 is too much to pay for this particular one.

The Sound
I will admit that it does sound good . . . compared to a $300 stereo. Actually when I first listened to it I enjoyed the sound. But since I worked at Sears electronics I listened to it many times a day for many weeks, and when I compared it to the other $500 stereos I realized how bad it was. We had a bet around the department on who could sell the first NSX-DS11 because it sucked so much.

Also, it has dual tweeters on each speaker, (which I thought was absolutely cool) but when I listened to it, it sounded like one of the tweeters on each side was not functioning. Maybe, just maybe the second one is there for show.

Dolby Digital? Not Quite
This is nice, but Dolby Digital only works if you have nice speakers. And the speakers that come with this are not nice. The wires for the surround sound are too short for most decent size living rooms, (unless you plan to have speaker wire running in the middle of your living floor) and the rear speakers do not have the power to make that missile fly over your left shoulder.

Also, Dolby Digital comes through in glorious 5.1 surround sound?the front right, the front left, the center, the rear right, the rear left, and THE .1 BASS. WHERE IS THE BASS UNIT ON THIS STEREO?????

You get Dolby Digital with this but only 5.0 Dolby Digital. Why? Sure you can hook up an extra base unit, but how much will that cost? At the very least $50? Why not just buy one with the base unit included.

If You REALLY Want This:
If you plan to purchase this model, make sure you give it a good listen to. Then listen to the other stereos of similar price. If you have a CD player and a ?walkman? and want to stay with Aiwa I would recommend the Aiwa HT-D390, the price is similar, you still get the Dolby Digital and instead of paying for a tape and cd player (which you already have) you get far superior speakers and more wattage.
