A solid 13" TV

bymjwise Dec 27, 2000
Pros 2 audio/video inputs, good picture quality
Cons mono only, somewhat cheap construction, very annoying power button
Recommended it? Yes
I originally recommended the purchase of this television as use for a monitor in our school's broadcast club. The version we purchased has silvery gray cabinet opposed to the black cabinet pictured here at epinions. There are a couple of features which I liked immediately when I was comparing it to other televisions in its price range:

First, it offers two independent audio/video composite inputs which can be very quickly cycled through using a dedicated front panel button. A great feature for use as a video monitor.
Second, it offers good picture quality for its price range. The colors are faithful and the tube has a good amount of detail. No real complaints there.
Third, it doesn't bug you continually if you unplug and then plug it back in. It is ready to use immediately once it is plugged in and turned on.

However, as nothing is perfect, especially in the world of cheaper TVs, I have a few complaints about this TV, but they are really nitpicking on what is a solid 13" television:

First, the front panel power button is very annoying in its behavior on this unit. It has two positions as one would expect, the "off" position is with the button not pressed in. The second position of the power button isn't really the "on" position so much as it the "ready to turn on" position. It goes into standby for a few seconds when the "power" button is pressed and THEN turns on. I've had situations where it has refused to come out of "standby mode" using the front panel power button only, thus requiring using the remote control. Not good, especially if the remote isn't handy.
Second, the power cable appears to be rather poorly connected to the unit. It goes in near the bottom of the TV but it just doesn't feel very secure to me, as if it could pop out at any second and break. That comment extends to the whole television construction quality: it just doesn't feel very well made, but it is likely to last as long as it is needed.
Third, the onscreen menus are just flat out ugly. Yes, they are functional but their choices of the reds, purples, and greens for the menus is just flat out unappetizing and can be difficult to see sometimes. I would have far preferred the industry-wide usual standard of blue and white which is bland but functional.

Finally, in spite of my gripes, I still like using this TV and I feel that is better than par than many of the other 13" TVs in its class. I recommend it to those people searching for a good bedroom TV or those looking for a cheap video monitor.
