Boys with Toys

Pros picture quality
Cons battery, portability
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If you are looking for something that is truly portable, you may want to shop around some.
Boys will have their toys, and this is one of the best I've gotten yet!

Aiwa is one of my favorite electronics brands in my price range. It is certainly not top of the line, but it's not bargain basement either. Anything I have gotten made by Aiwa has been good quality, and the XD-DW1 is no exception. I got mine refurbished at a great price. It is probably pretty outdated by now, but it serves me well.

This nifty piece of equipment is a portable DVD player which can be used alone or hooked up to your television. If you use the DVD player alone, you get a surprisingly good picture on a 5.8" screen.

I like being able to easily move the unit from the living room, upstairs, to the family room, downstairs.

I don't like running the DVD player off of the battery unless I have to for two reasons. First, it is an NiMh battery. I couldn't believe it when I read that. This is the kind of battery that came with the first portable phones that had to be run all the way down before they could be recharged. The battery last long enough to watch a movie, but then you have to let it totally run down before recharging.

Secondly, the battery is large and bulky.

The remote has logically marked buttons and was not hard at all to figure out. Once again, though, it is really large for a portable unit.

The unit it also heavy for being portable.

I have not been able to find a way to adjust the picture from wide screen to full screen so that there are not black lines above and below the picture. The book is quite easy to understand, but I don't see this addressed in there.

The quality of the DVD player is great. I got it refurbished about 9 months ago, and have not had problem one with it.

This is a great choice in a DVD player. If you are planning on using it only as a portable, I think that you may want to shop around some, but for occasionally packing it up to take somewhere it is okay.
