The good, the bad and the not so ugly

Pros DVD's anywhere, quality parts
Cons NiMH battery requires complete discharge
Recommended it? No
I recently purchased an Aiwa XD-DW1 and while I think it was a very good choice for me, it might not be right for everyone. I thought I might share some of my thoughts on it:

I can now take DVD movies with me anywhere. I thought this feature would come in handy on both long trips and when at friends houses who don't have a DVD player. Now I can share my favorite DVDs with friends regardless of whether or not they have a DVD player. The unit can function as a stand alone with its 5.8" screen (perfectly adequate for one person to watch)or in conjunction with a TV.

I have the unit hooked up to my TV at home with the DC connection and use the battery when taking it out. One thing that surprised me, however, was the size of the battery. It's HUGE! All of the pictures of the unit (including the one above) are with the battery off! The battery adds a good inch or two to the back of the unit. Don't get me wrong, it's still small; but we're not talking the size of a discman anymore...more like half the size of a laptop.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the full size remote. You might not think you would use a remote on a "portable" unit; but remember, with the S-video and composite out (theres also an optical output) you can very easily use this as a home unit too.

The battery lasts long enough for me to watch a complete 2 hr movie (sorry I haven't had to have it on longer than that) but my one issue with it is that it is nickel metal hydride (NiMh.) This means that you have to completely use the battery before recharging or you will get "memory effect". Since the unit doesn't have a rapid discharger, I guess you just have to keep it on until the battery dies and then start the charging process. Hopefully a lithium ion replacement will be used for future designs.

The interface is easy to use and the directions made sense to me (though I wish they had a parts list...it took me two days to figure out what my optical cable was). I lucked out and got a good price on my unit; but if I hadn't I probably would have waited a bit longer for the prices to come down. I really didn't need this toy. Overall, I'm glad I got it...and my DVD collection has started growing.
