Akai LCT2721AD by Ricardo 9-09-2007 (okay, but)

Pros Good picture quality, full function remote, light weight, integrated DVD convenient, good interconnection selection, stylish
Cons Poor sound performance and integration with modes changes, remote needs LED feedback to operator
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Sound from unit dropping out in first few days. Huge changes in sound range with mode and device changes. Remote should have LEDs to indicate mode and activity.
I bought this product because the factory refurbished unit offered an attractive low price and the performance specifications were comparable to other similar units. The integrated DVD/CD player was attractive option. However, the lower price is also probably a function of lesser performance of the product over competitors.
Drawback is sound output and control. When the source is the antenna or external source, the full volume of 5 Watts per audio channel is available. When using the internal DVD the full sound available drops to 1/3 of loudness from other sources and volume control becomes non-linear. When switching from channel to channel the MONO/STEREO/SAP always defaults back to mono rather than maintain last mode even though the other modes are available. Further, when switching from MONO to STEREO to SAP there are large changes in sound volume requiring readjustment and range of maximum volume available. For example, when changing modes a comfortable volume level in MONO becomes uncomfortably loud in STEREO. My set had a defect where at times the sound just ceases. Once in a while the sound jumps between two levels even when no settings have been changed.
The unit has separate RF coaxial antenna inputs for TV antenna and for cable box. The user manual shows a hook-up procedure which requires two external signal splitters with 3 extra coaxial cables to interconnect. It seems that these splitters and mixers should have been part of the internal configuration of the TV set to reduce cost and complexity of hook-up as well as reduce external cable clap-trap.
The full function remote is nice in what it covers. It should have some LED indicators to provide some visible feedback that when a control button is pressed to indicate that the remote control has responded. This helps identify problems more easily. When a low battery occur or mechanical defect occurs, there would be no LED response on the controller. An LED associated with major controller modes would help the use keep track of the key functions and groups associated with the particular mode. Also having an LED response makes it easier to troubleshoot a problem as being from the controller failing to transmit or TV failing to receive. This more quickly discriminates between out-of-range angle of controller to TV, or lack of output from controller, or lack of response from TV set to controller signal.
Picture quality has been good.
Cable connections are on the back of the set pointing down. This is good for wall mount where cabling has to go down. However, it makes it a little more difficult to hook-up the cables initially. If you change interconnect cables for different devices frequently, it is inconvenient because the space is a little tight to work in and the labels are hard to read. I have to make my own labels to paste on cabinet to read.
The set would only work on a grounded outlet. It would not work on three prong to two prong adapter.
