Great Sound Outweighed by Horrid Display, Controls, EQ

byufo6 May 20, 2004

Pros Great S/N specs and tracking accuracy; Flexible connectivity options; MP3/WMA capability...
Cons Schizophrenic display unreadable in daylight; Needlessly complex controls; Parametric EQ...
Recommended it? No

I decided to buy Alpine despite my intense dislike for their products' excitingly chunky "Dig Me - Steal Me" appearance (though they're certainly not alone in that fault.) Their HUs simply have the best S/N specs and reputation for skip-free CD play for the price.

The rep for those... Read full review »

Great unit for the price. A best value!

Pros Sound quality, search files/folders/stations function, connectivity features
Cons Unintuitive interphase and AM reception is poor. No graphic EQ.
Recommended it? Yes

I decided to write this review when I read the OTHER reviews in this site and just thought they didn't make any justice to the head unit. I'll try to cover all the aspects of the head unit.

Sound quality: I replaced a Sony Xplod head unit on my VW for the Alpine HU and the sound quality... Read full review »

Nice player not without flaws

Pros Sound quality, MP3 file/folder browsing
Cons Blinding blue light, Bad and unintuitive user interface/controls
Recommended it? Yes

I bought the CDA-9827 recently. The player sounds very nice except for some
annoyances, and here are my opinions on this player for anyone that may be
interested.

First the bad:
1) The blue lights are too bright in the night time and there is no option to
turn it off... Read full review »

Too many design flaws - dangerous to use while driving

bytcervo Dec 19, 2004

Pros Ability to control an iPod (with additional controller). MP3 and WMA support.
Cons Overly complex and confusing controls. Very slow rotary dial. Dangerous to use while...
Recommended it? No

I purchased the CDA-9827 for one reason: it's ability to interface with the Alpine iPod Interface (KCA-420i). While this review will focus on using the head unit to control an iPod, most of the complaints will still apply if you're using the CD or an attached changer, as the iPod is essentially... Pros use this head unit with your ipod for up 6 months with no problems.
Cons (see review)Insultingly horrendous tech support. Interface is actually terrible and...
Recommended it? No

i bought this unit for the sole purpose of listeing to my ipod over the car speakers. It seemed like an economical choice at the time at 250 bucks from tweeter. It worked flawlessly for about 6 months. First problem, the ipod would continue to play after you shut off the car. Annoying but no big... Read full review »

Unbelievably solid sound quality, handsome deck, great price

Pros awesome sound quality, easy mp3 navigation, cds or mp3s never skip, great looks
Cons small display, insufficient dimmer, not for the average joe
Recommended it? Yes

I was thinking of upgrading to a 12 disc changer, then i saw this unit at a store and thought if i got this i could still use my old changer (you only get around 110 songs on 6 cds compared to 170 mp3s on just 1 cd), plus i get a new head unit and I save some money too. I knew this was going to be... Read full review »

disappointing receiver

bydbz48 Dec 25, 2004

Pros Cheap. Clean sounds. Great quality.
Cons No EQ!!!! No DSP!!! No sound configuration!!! Flat-sounding when used with an amp.
Recommended it? No

I got this receiver because it was cheap ($260 at crutchfield) and had 4volts preamp outs. I didn't think too much of EQ's and DSP's. Boy was I wrong. The receiver was a pain in the butt to tune -- mainly because all you can do is adjust the treb and bass. The unit sounds nice in low and moderate... Read full review »

overall a great deck!

Pros Definitely one of the better looking decks out there. good, clean sound.
Cons mx booster if there's no easy access to a bass boost connected to your amp.
Recommended it? Yes

a great cd player, the mx booster is cool but if you have a sub its not good because the cd player cant back up what its trying to put out. Its all good though if the amp you have has some sort of accessible bass boost for when you turn on the mx booster. The face is not hard to see at all i dont... Read full review »

Love it for the price!

Pros Sound, Price and Functions
Cons What does Bass Center Frequency and Bass Band Width do for sound quality. Help!
Recommended it? Yes

This is a great system for the price. If anyone expects more then they should expect to pay $400 or $500 for the other models, which give you the ability to set the display color and brightness or equalizer customization.

The only thing I don't like…and maybe it's because I'm a dummy... Read full review »

Alpine builds quality and this unit is no exception

Pros Outstanding sound quality and construction. Beautiful design work on the faceplate as...
Cons Controls are not very user friendly, pricey compared to the competition, (Sony, JVC,...
Recommended it? Yes

I have owned this head unit for a little over a year. The truth is that many of the features I don't make use of or can't safely make use of while driving because the deck is a bit complex. The controls are not suitable to manipulation without looking at the deck, so I almost always have the remote... Read full review »
