One of the best navigation systems around

Pros Accurate, fast recalculation, excellent POIs, easy to read, can program while car is moving
Cons Older technology
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Excellent unit, would buy again, put it in my wife's car and now she is never lost. Uses older non-touch screen technology.
I put this system in 3 cars I own. After the first car, I could not live without it, so I went for the buck to install one in the other cars.

This system hook up into the car's instrumentation, so in get the speed and mileage from the car as well as from the the satellites. This makes things far more accurate, but you can just suction cup this up to your windshield. It need to be installed and wired in -- approximate cost of the wiring is $200.

This system is not as up to date as some of the other high end systems on the market today such as the Pioneer or even the new Alpine. It does not have touch screen, voice commands,3D maps or links to satellite radio for traffic conditions. But, it is a solid, easy to use system that gets you there.

One feature I really like, and a reason I did not go with the Pioneer for my last car even though in had more advanced features is that the Alpine lets you program the unit while the car is moving after responding to a warning. This means that a passenger or perhaps you can program it without pulling over and stopping the car. I would find stopping the car in some cases more dangerous than entering a quick command into the system.

Directions are good, although like any system, will not always take you on the route you might expect or want. Adjustments when you make a wrong turn are fast, although initially the recalculation with try to make you turn around and get back on the original route, even though this may no longer be best. It looks like they programmed it to only do a partial recalculation after a wrong turn, not the entire trip. It will, however, after a few attempts to get you back on the original route, recalculate the trip. This is a minor problem, and only inconveniences me a few time when I did not know where I was.

System come with 2 DVD which split the country in two. Good listing of points of interest and phone numbers, although a bit more work could be done the sorting of points of interest when dozens are listed.

Overall, this system will get you where you want to go all the time. Unless you are looking for the latest high tech features, you will not be disappointed.
