Pros Great sound, EQ, Crossover, Cool Display, Satellite ready, iPod-ready, plays MP3 discs
Cons Takes a couple days to figure out, midday sun may make display hard to see
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If you don't make the effort to figure out this head unit, you won't get the results, kind of like life. I highly recommend this deck.
I recently purchased an Alpine 9853. I have owned several aftermarket CD decks now, including a $325 Eclipse deck and a lower end Alpine one. I was beginning to think that my speakers and subs were just not good enough to sound great. But man, they are just fine. My cheap Alpine 9821 was the biggest problem.

The Alpine 9853 is an amazing piece of equipment. It looks great, and sounds amazing. But unless you are good with electronics and pick things up quickly, then I would recommend that you go elsewhere. It is difficult. I am a bit of an electronics freak and audiophile, and yet, this was the first electronic thing that I really had to work at to understand and suit to my needs.

You've probably read about the "Glide Touch Bar." Yes, there are no preset buttons, but instead a laptop-like bar. It takes some getting used to, but it is pretty cool when you get the hang of it.

The faceplate is detatchable and you can tilt it in different angles, which is a nice feature, however, depending on the angle of your back window, the sun will make the display a bit hard to read in midday light. Not a big deal, but it will happen.

This thing has amazing sound quality. Once you figure out which EQ setting you want to use (5 band, 7 band, or presettings) then you can really tailor the sounds to your liking. I chose the 7 band, and it really customizes the sound. Again, this deck is for semi-experts. There is no such thing as Bass and Treble settings, it's not that simple, but your sound quality makes it worth it.

Other great features are the built in amplifier which gives off more power than most head units. There is a Time Correction feature that you can apply to each speaker and subwoofers. I'd never even thought of something like this. Using measurements, you can actually delay the sound of invidual speakers so ALL the sound reaches your ears at the same time. Wow! That's pretty cool when you figure it out!

The built in crossover is amazing as well. I added 2 Infinity 10 inchers with an MTX amp a while back, but my car speakers are still stock. They kind of sucked before, but now, with the crossover, I chose EXACTLY what frequencies can go to each speaker to make it sound clear and to minimize distortion at high volumes. Wow, I wish I'd had that before. Now I can live with the speakers until I get new ones.

Other great features: Sirius/XM ready (I have Sirius, I LOVE IT), the iPod interface hookup (I just have a regular mini-plug that will hook into any portable device), a myriad of customization options, cool display, great sound, and the remote.

Bottom line: You will not be disappointed... maybe confused for a little while, but once you read that manual and figure it out, you'll feel damn proud of it. My Subs have a new lease on life and my speakers are now made liveable. A great buy.
