The Bottom Line:
This CD player is just average. It works fine for day-to-day use, but has problems on long car trips.
I have an Alpine 7856 for my Honda Accord. I originally bought this system because my factory installed Honda CD player was 6 or 7 years old, and no longer worked. When I went to the store, I found a few different CD players in the $130 price range. I bought the Alpine because: A- Honda uses Alpine equipment for their audio systems and wiring and B- The guy at the store recommended it over the other brands.
I have been satisfied with the CD player for short trips. It never skips and I never have any problems. But, after continuous use for 2-3 hours, it will overheat and stop working. I then have to stop listening to the CD player and switch over to the radio. This is very annoying when I am driving in a really rural area and can only listen to country radio stations.
The radio also works well, but it has a disposition to only let you seek for stations and not just go up frequency by frequency. I know there is a complicated way to change this, and I know I did change it when I bought it, but now it has reverted back to 'seek' mode.
The system has a 'loud' feature, which increases the overall level of volume instead of using the dial. I first didn't use this, but it really doesn't get very loud if you do not use this feature.
The buttons also leave much to be desired. They all light up in a neon-green color, but functions are painted with white paint. Because of this, it is very hard to read what each button does when the buttons light up. I have had the system for a few months, so now I just know where each function is. At first, I had significant trouble operating the system when I was driving.
My brother has a similarly priced Infinity system, and it seems to have slightly better sound, better controls, and doesn't overheat. I would recommend an Infinity over an Alpine.
