This is a review on the the Alpine DVA 5200.. DVD Player for your car
In order to review the DVA 5200, I must also include the screen (CVA 1005) as they both work in conjunction with each other
==THE SCREEN (AKA 1005)==
The coolest part of the 1005 is the motorized screen. The unit looks like a cheap radio until you turn on the car, the screen rolls out horizontal and rises up to a vertical position. It's my little own Transformer :)
The screen lights up and that's when the show begins... the base unit comes with a FM/AM tuner. The functions are easy to use and buttons are simple. When you switch to different components (NAV,DVD, etc.) the button functions change to match.
=DVD PLAYER=
The DVD player combined with the 1005 is by far the best looking mobile video picture you can find. Not to mention the sound. The DVD will not work if your car is in drive. It will only work when the parking brake is in the up position. DARN... but wait... my installer put in a bypass switch and now I am able to drive in bumper to bumper traffic and watch a movie. My passengers love this as those long trips to Vegas is full of entertainment now. One thing to consider is the big remote control that the DVA comes with, in fact, it's bigger than most home remotes, finding a home for his monster is a task. One complaint about the DVA is the fact that on some (not all) DVDs, it defaults to showing subtitles, which you need to turn off via remote. The "setup" that is usually associated with home players is not on this mobile unit. Therefore, taking subtitles off is not a function that is available... nor is the "autoplay" function that is found on many players.
This is one of my favorite car "toys"... and it's a toy that draws much attention when the valet brings up your car... I've had people in trucks and minivans stop me and ask me what that is and how they can get one.... it's a real show stopper.
