Alpine Type S... more than just entry level

The Bottom Line:
The price point alone is a great start, plus the DVC setup makes it easy to install. Sound great in a good box too.
I've owned a lot of Alpine before. So when the time came around for new subwoofers for my PDX 600.1 to beat up... ahem, I mean play it seemed that Alpine was a good choice.
Side note --- I know a lot of people think you can run two Alpine Type R's off that amp, but the truth is, you can't. Well OF COURSE you CAN, but its not wise, it just can't drive them to its potential.
So it came down to either a single Type R, or two Type S subwoofers. I took home two Type S subs in a sealed box to Alpine specs. So getting these hooked up and the first thing you notice is that in a sealed box, these things really PUNCH. Very clear and defined. They stay clear even at high excursion or complicated basslines. So far, they handle the stated max RMS rating everyday and show no signs of stopping. Also for the price, if one goes, its not gonna make me cry to replace it. I'm also sure in a ported box these would really pack even more sonic punch.
I've owned a Type R in the past, and I really feel the extra cone area and matched power handling of the 2 Type S's sound better than a single Type R.
Also these subwoofers, even though not explicitly marketed as such are very very shallow, and only call for 1.0 cubes of airspace per subwoofer. This makes them great for space restricted installations in truck cabs, or trunks that can't be just for subwoofers. They utilize a convienient mounting system with a concealed gasket that hides any mounting screws. The speaker terminals are push style, Alpine provides a perfectly sized jumper cable to run both sets of coils in any ohm configuration you desire. Also the coils are NOT on opposite sides of the subwoofer. I HATE running wires around the back of a subwoofer and hoping they don't get pinch or whatever when mounting. Plus if you like to mount inverted, it doesn't look that clean.
