The Bottom Line:
I recommend this product. It has great sound and a great price.
I just bought the VS 2121cb package from Costco. For 39.99 it included the 3 main speakers plus a pair of headphones and a stereo RCA to headphone(FF) adapter. I was very impressed with the sound. Granted the base doesn't pound your chest and tends to distort a little, but I think it is rather good for the subwoofer size and price of the whole package.
Another rather nice design is incorporating the power adapter into the subwoofer. This allows a normal power cord to exit the back of the subwoofer instead of one that leads to a bulky AC adapter. I hate AC adapters that hog space on my plug strips.
I have only one negative comment and that is regarding the intra-speaker wires. They are all permanently attached. I would have preferred they used the standard headphone cables, or preferably mono RCA cables.
One last little design issue that I noticed... the audio input cable runs to the right speaker. Altec goes to the trouble of making this weird 7 pin power cable (looks similar an old AT keyboard plug), but then they run the audio input to the right speaker. I honestly don't mind running separate lines from the amp (in this case the subwoofer I imagine) to each speaker. Three wires coming out of the right speaker is just a little odd to me. But once again, this is just being nitpicky and probably over wire conscious.
This is a fine package for gaming and casual listening. It is not powerful enough for party music. It is well worth the price.
