High Value High Performance 5.1 Speakers

bykuocdn Jun 22, 2003
Pros Excellent Value 5.1 Speakers for Price, High-quality Wooden Subwoofer
Cons Analog 5.1 System, Rear Speaker Wires are Short, Subwoofer Control Separated from Main Control Panel
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  A high-value high performance 5.1 speakers from Altec Lansing. What more do you want?
Altec Lansing is an industry leader of quality speakers. Their speakers are installed in sports stadiums, amusement parks, & auditoriums namely in Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Disneyland, & Sydney Opera House.

Although Altec Lansing 251 is designed to be an entry model in the 5.1 surround multimedia speaker system, you will not be disappointed by its quality & performance. It will provide 60-watts of total continuous power and 90-watts total peak power (max).

This stylish & slick design model of 6 speaker system consists of the following:
1. 2x front 3-inch driver 7-watts satellite speakers
2. 2x rear 3-inch driver 7-watts satellite speakers
3. 1x center 3-inch driver 7-watts satellite speaker
4. 1x 5.25-inch long-throw 25-watts wooden subwoofer

Setup the system is almost effortless. Cables are color-coded for easy connection, and a quick connect card with diagrams is available to speed up the setup process.

However, rear speaker wires are short. It spans only about 5-metre long from the subwoofer. For a small room, it is fine. But for a bigger room, you will need to setup the wires flawlessly so as not to waste a single inch of the speaker wire.

After setup, you can enjoy the quality sound that definitely surpasses most entry-level 5.1 surround speaker system. Overall system response is rated at 35Hz - 18kHz.

Signal-to-noise ratio is excellent unless volume is tuned up too high (above normal volume level). This is of course expected of a 5.1 multimedia speaker system that is analog not digital.

All the shielded satellite speakers responded well. However you would need to ramp up the rear speaker volume considerably in order to enjoy a more theater-like ambient surround sound.

The front right speaker contains the built-in control panel for power on/off, master volume control, center volume control, rear surround volume control, & headphone jack. It also has a special base with a hook-design that is designed to sit on top of your monitor without falling off.

Bass delivered from wubwoofer is very powerful; so powerful such that it will rattle your picture frames on your walls. Therefore it is necessary to reduce the volume of subwoofer located not on the master control panel but on the subwoofer itself ... I considered this to be a design flaw.

To summarize, Altec Lansing 251 is a high-value system with excellent performance designed to be fitted in a small room. Price is considered cheap for an entry-level 5.1 speaker surround system.
