Cons no midrange

I am not sure of the reputation of Altec-Lansing when it comes to computer speakers but I am definitely impressed with the 295's that came with my Dell. I mean you can really crank them up and get full range sound. As most people have already said, the subwoofer is great. The whole system sounds FAR better than my crappy portable Sony CD/radio.

I did have a problem with these speakers within months of getting the computer. The speakers would start to make a horrible cracking noise. It was sooooo annoying. It got to the point where I couldn't even turn on the speakers because they would crackle. At this point I called Dell. They promptly replaced them and all has been great for 2 years.

As far as sound quality, the bass is great. Although, the further you are away from the woofer, the better the bass. I have the woofer right uner my desk and the bass isn't all that boomin' until I stand up and move away from the desk. There isn't much mid-range, but the high stuff comes in pretty well. The satellite speakers are pretty crisp and clear. I had a buddy in college who had these speakers and lived below me in our fraternity houese and when he had his 295's on I could hear it in my room. It sounded like he had his Aiwa mini-system cranked, but it was actually his computer!

I don't think these are the best speakers you can get, but they are a really good value. If you are looking are a decent set of speakers that aren't outrageously priced, these are the way to go.
