Just OK Speakers

Pros Ok sound quality, Ok bass, Small simple design, Decent price
Cons Only ok in most categories, Terrible features
Recommended it? No
The ACS 45.2's come from the excellent Altec Lansing line of computer speakers (oh ACS 48, oh ACS 48, oh what a set of speakers) and they hold their own as an effective representative of their brand within the $50 price range.

Description

The ACS 45.2 set-up is a 3 piece set; 2 satellites (POWER CUBES), and 1 subwoofer. The wood subwoofer pumps 20 watts, while the satellites manage 6, both of which are about par for the course. The satellites are small enough to fit on your desktop with ease, while the subwoofer will slide nicely by your feet under your desk or on the floor. The volume can be controlled by the satellites via "Volume Up" and "Volume Down" arrows. There are no tone, bass, mute buttons/dials nor are there any microphone jacks or headphones jacks. There is a second input and a replaceable fuse (joy). They look nice, not great, but they are not an eye sore in any sense of the term.

Under the Light

In my use, the speakers have been ok. Probably the strongest component is the subwoofer which really throbs, but it seems to be throbbing with the lesser quality bass not the true bass that I like. The satellites are ok, producing thoroughly acceptable sound quality. There is mild fuzziness on mine when there is no sound due to the interference inherent in computer sound. These produce $50-70 computer sound for music. They are ok for the casual gamer, but they don't make System Shock 2(or a similar game in which sound can really AFFECT you) really scary you the way nice surround speakers (and a decent sound card) can.
The worst features of this speaker package are the extras, because they just suck. The volume control is pisspoor, with the aforementioned button up and down method; it is slow, it is imprecise, and it doesnt allow you to know instantly what the acceptable sound level is for your speakers. Also the absence of a mute button is a crime, which is compounds the poor volume control; a mute button is an essential feature for computer speakers. As is, when I need immediate silence with these speakers, I have to yank the cord on the back of the control speaker. Another oversight is the lack of tone and bass control. There lack of a surround mode is fine since they are pretty cheap. Oh and these speakers will NOT fill a medium sized room, you are gonna need to spend ~$100 to even come close to that. My review supposed that the user wielded a small room or desk area for these speakers.

Verdict

You want to spend $50 for speakers? Then the ACS 45.2's are fine. You get your money's worth; No more, no less. I give them 3 stars because the next computer speaker price bracket ($80-120) offers not only better quality, but more importantly the best bang for the buck with several truly exceptional speakers (ACS 48, Midiland 1030, MicroSoft DSS 80 1.0(yes that MicroSoft), CSW FPS 1000). Ok does not earn Eeks' dollars; These are my brother's speakers, which I have been stuck using for a month.

Note
The best Speakers out there are the Klipsch Pro Media's. For $200 you get MADNESS. Check out Goofball's review of them.
