Altec ACS 495 = Great Package
Pros
great bass, interface
Cons
surround is horrible
Recommended it?
No
These ACS 495's came with the computer my family purchased back in 1997. I am quite pleased with these speakers still, even though they are 3 years old their quality has not been greatly surpassed by the competition of other PC Speakers.
The ACS495 has 2 satellites which stand about 9 inches high, each with 2 speakers (a surround sound speaker and a regular speaker). It also comes with a 6" subwoofer in a box slightly bigger then a shoe box. The subwoofer puts out a great amount of bass it placed properly.
The sound system also comes with it's own program and interface, where you can control the volume of each speaker. It also has the option of 2 modes, a Stereo mode and a Dolby Prologic mode. The stereo mode does not include the surround sound or center channel.. but it focuses more on the mid-range sound and on louder and clearer bass. The Dolby Prologic mode focuses on the treble.. and includes the center channel and treble.
However, the surround sound speakers this system claims to have is a waste of engineering. They sound horrible and nothing like what surround sound is supposed to sound like.. they should never be turned up.
Overall for under $150, this is one of the best sound systems available and perfect for the user that has an older sound card that does not support more then 2 or 3 speakers.
