The Altec ACS 495 speakers deliver amazing sound with only 3 speakers. With this system you get two satellite speakers and one very large subwoofer. And let me tell you these things can handle anything you give them.
The two satellite speakers are each about 8" tall and should be placed on opposite sides of your computer. With the 495s you have a very nice surround sound feature (which is no joke, it is great surround sound from only the two speakers) and you can adjust the 'center channel' (the sound coming strait towards you) to your liking. The subwoofer is absolutely amazing when it comes to bass. This thing will rattle your whole house. But don't think this is a real scratchy bass; on the contrary, you get a very clean sound. The subwoofer is a large unit, so you will need some space on the ground near your computer.
The setup and control of the altec ACS 495s is fairly easy but it has had its moments where it becomes difficult. When you first install the speakers it requires a bit of time because there are many connections. The two satellite speakers connect to the subwoofer, then the subwoofer connects to the computer by two connections. Once I had gotten everything running I only had one problem. The controls for volume, bass, etc. were on the right satellite speaker. The 495s, boasting a USB connection, stated that when you adjusted something on the speaker, a screen would pop up and help you to adjust it to you liking. This was very nice at first, but then one day, the screen stopped showing up! So I had to adjust everything manually and less accurately.
So, if you are willing to overlook the slight control problems I had, then you should definitely get these speakers. They are better computer speakers than all other I have seen. So go get some, and get ready to rock it.
