The Bottom Line:
Big sound in a small but nice box.
Hello.
We were looking for a replacement personal computer speaker set when this Altec Lansing set was introduced to us in the computer store where we bought the system earlier. We had basic set of cheap speakers before and there is a huge difference between the sound qualities of the two. Actually, we have the ACS 45 but they are almost the same. The only difference is that the 45 series comes with bigger satellite speakers that are covered with a cloth front panel. If this gets dirty, you cannot clean it. The sub has so much base that we have it pulled all the way to the lowest setting.
Even this way there is so much base that the glass in the doors and in the windows are shaking. I have seen similar system where the sub was on the floor, under the desk. We tried that and the base was cut off from the woofer. Now we have the sub on a separate desk, well exposed to the living room. This way I can hear the pounding even in the next room with doors closed.
Playing games with this speaker system is a unique experience. Lately I am not allowed to play Quake III arena with the lights off cause the rest of the family gets scared and the neighbors think that someone is being killed here and they might call by law on us. I would seriously recommend this Altec Lansing system to any computer user who likes great sound and deep base.
To fully enjoy this system with your PC/Mac, make sure that you have at least 32 voices supported by your sound card. We have it plugged into a Creative Labs Sound Blaster PCI-128 card. The sound is unbelievably real!
