The Bottom Line:
A Great Speaker Set - for more then just your home computer - frankly, worth the money.
Altec Lansing?s ADA880 speaker set has been out a while now, so why bother even looking at them? Don?t they have, newer, sleeker models to choose from? Yes, however, this dynamo of a speaker set is a must have for the Computer Owner who has is all - except REALLY GOOD set of speakers.
Altec Lansing frankly did everything right with this model.. A great subwoofer that REALLY delivers the power (no trumped up PMPO power ratings here) and four satellites that deliver very good surround sound. On my computer, this is my primary set of speakers (I can actually run a total of up to 12 speakers off my system) - and the reason is sound.. The speaker delivers great sound and range. And with the dual input feature (analog and S/PDIF CoAx Digital) it can easily discern a signal form my computer?s sound card (just the standard analog sound out) or form my computers DVD Decoder (Sigma Designs Hollywood+ with Digital Sound Output) - the sound is great either way. It includes a remote control that?s actually useful, and is a snap to set up. The only ding I might give again the set is the lack of a headphone jack.
Here are some useful specs on the speakers:
Altec Lansing ADA880 Dolby Digital 5 Piece Speaker System w/remote control
Frequency Response: 20Hz to 20kHz
Input Impedance: Less then 10K Ohms
Analog Input Sensitivity: 300mV for full output
Digital Input: S/PDIF CoAx (Composite RCA)
Drivers (satellites): Four 3'' full range Two 1'' tweeters
Drivers (subwoofer): One 8'' voice coil
Satellite Power: 40 Watts RMS (10 watts per driver) at 0.1% THD
Subwoofer Power: 40 Watts at 0.1% THD
Signal-To-Noise Ratio: less then 70dB
So, really how good are these speakers - well, good enough to actually put of your regular stereo system if you felt so inclined. Yes, they are THAT good. IF you run across these beauties, give them a try - you won?t be sorry that you did!
