Very good low-price speakers with useful features

Pros Good sound, useful features, no hum, low price
Cons Made in China
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Recommended. At this price, you can't expect much, but these have the most useful features, good sound, no hum, and narrow size.
I needed some basic desktop speakers for listening to CDs and online radio, and for video games. These were easy to find at Target for $14.99, and seemed worth a try.

I was very pleasantly surprised. They have no subwoofer or deep bass, but they reproduce stereo CDs, online music, and game sounds, with a tight, full sound. They also attain a very high volume despite their 1-watt-per-channel rating. I have them right up against my CRT monitor and there is no hum or vibration. At 2 3/4" wide, they are narrow enough to fit into a tight space: I have a monitor stand 22" wide, and there is room for these two speakers and my bulky 17" CRT monitor on top of the stand.

Conveniently located at the bottom of the right speaker are an on-off switch and volume control, as well as a headphone jack.

If you decide you want more volume or reproduction, then you can shop for speakers in a different price range. If you just want some good basic speakers, these are great starters. The controls and headphone jack are nice features in this price range, and the narrow width allows you to place them in tight spaces.
