The Bottom Line:
Near surround sound without five speakers
I'll be honest and say that for me speakers are used in conjunction with my computer not to listen to music, but to play games. I am not a stereophile, nor do I play one on TV, so I can't tell you about all the wavelength specs and such for this speaker system. In point of fact this sytem replaces a pair of Sony Active speakers, which I picked up so that I could hear everything well while playing the original Diablo.
When going out to get speakers I quickly had scratch off the list those 5-way surround sound speaker systems. My main computer is in a small room and speakers number 4+5 would end up behind a bookcase. Thus, I trudged out to my local computer super store to see what was available. I spent about an hour and a half avoiding sales people and listening to the speaker setups there. Dual speakers went by the wayside when I tried out a three way set with sub-woofer. That large sub-woofer unit puts out enough bass to add definite value to game play and adds into the harmonics of the two satellite speakers to give a real depth to the sound. Out of stock at the store, but readily available through pricewatch.com and shopper.com.
Installation was, more or less, a breeze. The only snag was finding the right software setting that would let me get sound out of the speakers. Once I did I quickly realized that Alice Cooper was NOT the right choice to test the speakers. If you've ever sat up front to listen to a heavy metal band then you know the gut curdling feeling that the sound can give you. I got that from this speaker system, and more when I accidently turned the sound knob on the speaker in the wrong direction. Floor rattling stuff!
In all I'm very happy with these speakers and was scared silly the first time I heard a monster beside me in Diablo 2! In SimCity I can hear helicopters flying from right to left behind me, and in Starfleet Command I enjoy the wonderful feeling on my feet of enemy ships biting the vacuum. About my only real problem is that the sub-woofer takes up valuable foot space under my desk... but it does act as a nice foot rest and massage unit while gaming.
Oh, and Beethoven and other composers sound well rendered also.
