Altec Lansing ATP4

Pros Good quality build & sound
Cons A bit too heavy on the bass
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Good value mid range speakers.
I wanted a new speaker system for my PC as I thought the old sound system was not loud enough. Thats the main reason why I bought the ATP4 set from Altec Lansing.

This is a good quality sound system with one exception & that is the Subwoofer. Its way too loud for the overall balance of sound. If you leave the speakers set up on the factory default the subwoofer will boom. Its so noisy its unbearable. So the solution is to turn down the bass dial. This is found along with several other controls on the front of one of the smaller satelite speakers. This is a very handy feature.

From the controls you can adjust the overall volume, the amount of bass & treble. You can also change the mode of the speakers from stereo to quad & to a gaming setting. These settings don't appear to make a huge difference but that might be down to the position of the speakers. I have them all in front of me, perhaps I should try & set two of the speakers behind me. This is the way they recommend you do it.

As for the overall quality of sound ( With the bass turned down ) I found it more than adequate. This system can put out over 100 watts RMS. Which for a PC sound system is pretty loud. There's no way you could play a game at full volume with these speakers & stand it for long.

The midrange put out by the four satelite speakers is nice & sweet. I find them great for playing music. I have a large music collection on my PC & play something everyday whilst surfing the net. The Altecs sound just fine for this.

I would say the one draw back with this 4.1 set of speakers is the lack of the center speaker. This means that speech is not emphasised in films & is a bit muted in games. But apart from this you wont notice the difference. If you need speakers to improve your film viewing of Dolby surround I would not recommend these.

A final word, the ATP4's are compact & neat. They look really cool & with the volume turned up half way sound impressive too. I paid #70 for my set which I think was a reasonable price for the quality. They are easy to set up & simple to configure. I would recommend them to any hardcore gamer & to most music lovers on a budget.
