Above Average/ Better for Movies

Pros solidly built, stylish, good clarity, good imaging, HT SPEAKERS
Cons can be harsh when listening to music, lack of good midrange, NOT MUSIC SPEAKERS
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  recommended for starter HT speakers because of price, clarity and good imaging, not recommended for music only speakers because of lack of midrange
I purchased four sats (AVS200) and one center channel (AVS100) for my bedroom system. They are hooked up to B&K AVP2000 (upgraded with DD THX) and powered by a Carver AV-634 amp. The speakers are well-built and stylish. The only qualm I have with them physically is that it is difficult to tighten the binding posts onto the speaker wires. The binding posts are recessed in the back of the speaker. Nit-picky considering the small size of these speakers. My fingers are too big I guess.

I was very surprised by the clarity of these speakers and they have decent imaging and soundstage. They performed admirably in movies. The opening battle scene of "Gladiator" was especially surprising. I heard some things (arrows flying, chains on the catapult rattling) more distinctly than on my main HT system (much more expensive Definitive Technology speakers on Denon receiver).

As with most sats, it is inevitable that some of the mids are dropped and not picked up by the sub (also Mirage). This is evident when listening to music in "direct" mode (no processing with exception of sending same signal to the powered sub as the fronts). John Lennon's voice sounds especially harsh and Macy Gray's voice doesn't sound quite as good as on my 15 year old pair of Paradigm 7se speakers. In my opinion, these speakers are not for music but to be fair they were probably designed and targeted toward the HT market. They are also very finicky when it comes to placement. Poor placement or acoustically challenging rooms will accentuate the lack of midrange in these speakers.

All in all, I would recommend these speakers for first time HT buyers over the junk that BestBuy/Circuit City pushes (Infinity, Polk ... oh how the mighty have fallen, Bose, Yamaha, Sony). If you watch a lot of movies and listen to music occasionally then you will get a lot of mileage out of these. Just don't make them your only music speakers.
