The Bottom Line:
They only cost 30 bucks, but: There are better options at a similar price.
I returned these speakers. That should tell you a lot. I then bought a set of logitech z-640's off of buy.com for $70 with a $20 rebate (so, $50 final cost.)
Please read my review of that item to learn the many, MANY reasons why I love them.
So, let me say this first off: To frame any review regarding speakers, and if you already have these, you shouldnt feel bad. Please reread that line later if you start to get depressed. Why? Because technology today is so good with audio that virtually anything you buy will sound pretty good. I have seen this over and over again these days. So, if you only have $33 to spend on a 5 speaker system, I suppose this would do. And, I realize a lot of prices have gone down drastically recently. If you got these a while ago, you probably saved a bundle. That all being said, if you are out to buy something today, I would try to find the extra 7 bucks to get a better system, or watch for a sale on something.
Here's some of the issues:
* The cables only allow 4 speaker input. If you have a sub out, forget using it.
* The audio cables are all spaghetti string - very flimsy.
* The subwoofer is lightweight, thin fiberboard, and the back is unfinished.
* The specs on the box DONT MATCH the specs IN the box.
* More importantly: the speakers I got hissed noticably, even at only 50% volume, even when not connected to the computer.
* The amplifier in this unit must be powered by an anemic ethiopian hamster on a running wheel. It does not produce a volume I would call "loud". Sort of like getting 'luke warm' coffee, and being told it's hot. You know the difference, and you dont like it, but you can drink it. Then, combine this with the dreadful hiss these things produce at it's highest volume, and it was just no good.
* The speakers are of an odd fat shape. I felt smaller speakers would have looked and fit better on my desk.
I guess I would have to say I didnt like these. I felt they were of no better quality than the cheapest generic speakers you might find, and maybe worse. (remember from above, that I do still feel any speakers today will do a decent job) They do come in black or white, one nice treat. And, while there is no point at turning these things up, still, at low volumes, they do sound ok. Again, my point is, if you only intend to buy a 4.1 system (no center channel) there are other better options nearly this cheap. And, if you want to spend a bit more, ($50) you can get a really very satisfying setup.
