Epson Stylus Scan 2000 - Value in Use!

Pros Everything about it!
Cons Did not find a negative thing!
Recommended it? Yes
Know this?:
?I got this journal article that I want to share with my friends and colleagues. What struggle, I have to:
- Copy and fax it, make some remarks on a cover sheet
- Got to the graphics department and have it scanned, then create .jpg files and e-mail it to the ones who don?t have a fax machine
- For my presentation I need to re-type it so I can use quotes and possibly copy some of the structure
- Who can make me some color copies as hand-outs for the next meeting?
- Oh boy, that takes me forever, probably I just do everything from zero again??

Imagine that:
I sit down in my chair and do exactly all of those things in 10 minutes without even moving an inch! How?
If you are really interested in efficiency and combining several office (or home office for that matter) related tasks in one machine that is affordable and easy to use, here is how:

What it is
The Epson Scan 2000 is a real multi-talent! It not only combines high quality ink-jet printing with color copying, scanning, faxing and e-mail function of your scans but is platform independent on top, which means you can use the machine on either PC or Macintosh systems. It uses regular parallel or USB connectivity. For everyone who needs to run these certain tasks regularly it?s a wonderful way of saving time, equipment cost and space at the desk. The unit comes n pretty slick design and (for all iMac users) there is an exchangeable front cover available in all iMac colors too that cost an extra of $4.95 (see Epson web site). The unit works with A4 and US letter format and everything in between. Pretty clever package: you can use it all over the world with any operating system. Very convenient for us if we have to go to some place else (who knows where) for a next international assignment.

What you get
When delivered you get a box in a box, the unit is very good protected and packed properly. All parts of the unit are taped and wrapped in extra plastic bags. There is a poster format start-up sheet, which makes unpacking and installation very easy. Most importantly: you don?t have to screw around or re-construct the device as it comes in one piece. Simply unwrap and plug it in.
Missing: printer cable! Unfortunately they don?t mention that while ordering online or on the outside of the box. This may be due to the compatibility to all systems, so just make sure to buy or order the proper cable, depending on the system you are using. Two CD?s are included with all drivers for all systems (software is different on Windows or MacOS) and the bonus CD Adobe PhotoDeluxe. The software is compatible from Win95 and up or MacOS8.1 and up.
A nice, very explanatory manual is included too but you will be shocked about the online help features and tutorials ? amazing! Two ink cartridges are included in the package as well, as a special map for sensitive items to be scanned (so you can protect them while running through the scanner).

Installation
After choosing the right area you simply plug the unit in and install the ink cartridges (very easy). The self-test is explained in the manual and at the inner-side of the cover, runs very quick and easy. Then you have to run the installation procedures from the CD?s. As I only installed it on an iMac I can only judge the Mac part, but this one is easier than counting from 1-20! You can make adjustments to all program parts or just use the defaults, which would be working just fine for most cases.

How it works
Now, as you installation is complete, its time to play around a bit. And this is clearly the fun part! As usually with Epson, everything runs as described and very intuitively. Canon/HP have certainly missed the train here, especially as they don?t even offer the All-in-one-machines for Macintosh?s (I couldn?t believe it, but it?s true!). When searching for a suitable device someone from HP customer service couldn?t believe it himself and he cried: ?Damn! We are missing quite some market here, right??

Printing works the same way as a regular user is used to. All drivers run properly on the iMac. The print option screen when customizing the print, are not too overloaded and the features and settings are well explained. Prints deliver a resolution of 1440 x 720 dpi.

Scanning is performed through the front tray, the paper you want to scan, snaps-on automatically and is fed through pretty quickly. All scanning functions are controlled in the Epson software (see below) or from any application that works with the built-in Twain driver. The scanner looks 68bits deep and performs scans up to 600 x 300 dpi which should be enough for regular office use or at home.

OCR provides text recognition for scanned pages. Whenever you want to use a text on a piece of paper within any word processor application, this is where OCR comes into the game. You just perform a regular scan and tell the software what areas to recognize at text. After a couple of on-screen comparisons and definitions you get the scanned page in WinWord or something similar and can modify the text while keeping the pictures (please respect copyrights!).

Color Copying is as easy as 1-2-3! Just feed the sheet in the front tray (the same that is used for scanning) and hit one button ? voila, the copy runs already! I copied some photos and catalogue pages with a reasonable quality, enough to show it around and even present it for business reasons. Copying a copy of an invoice that was needle plotted still provides enough details to read all numbers and letters. There are also reduce and enlarge option as button features on top of the printer (70%, 93%, 100% and 141%). Copy mode can be b&w, half-tone, gray-scale or color.

Faxing would be another feature of the device. When scanning a page you can easily send it as a fax with the next step. The software simply recognized the task for a black & white copy and communicates with the installed fax software, so you don?t have to deal with a new interface for that matter (needs to be set-up in the control panel for the fax function within the Epson software, pretty easy!). If you subscribe to eFax.com service (partnering with Epson) you can even expand you fax/e-mail package to a real off-line solution that is based on the Internet.
Receiving faxes is also possible with this unit.

E-Mail can be used the same way as the fax function. Whatever you scan can be sent via e-mail automatically, using your regular e-mail software. Again: no new software involved. Just work the way you are used to!

The software solution
The special software package from Epson provides a user interface that is more than intuitive! There are simple buttons that stand for one of the tasks described above. Either you want to scan and print, scan and fax, scan and OCR, scan and e-mail or use the scanned image in any application of your choice, there is just only one button to click. Wonderful and easy, real fun!

As you register you can order the Epson Smart Panel software interface (must be even easier) for free by sending in your registration along with the coupon. This part is included in the Windows version already!

Conclusion
Here, Epson proofs again (and surprisingly as the only supplier in the market for Mac systems) that convenience and state-of-the-art technology can be married very successfully even at no-high-end level. This unit is offers real value in use and you realize that the R&D department of Epson has a common understanding of their user base. This is not only about business or offering a plain product to serve a market, it is about the fun to experience when using their products!

For me: Epson forever!
