Great value - but not for everyone

Pros Affordable and powerful consumer-grade G4. Large screen.
Cons Lack of expandability.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  A buy with caveat. If you feel this is for you, do not hesitate.
If there was a time when dreams of a large screen and G4-driven iMac populated the nights of many fans (and fueled the rumor mills of many web sites), it may be an idea ready for retirement. First designed to be a cheap yet powerful solution for the educational markets, Apple for once listened to the users when faced with a general public outcry: ?Why can't we buy one??

It remains that when considering industry trends toward LCD screens, the flat-screened ?Luxo Jr.? cousins may be a better choice, though lacking in expansion options as well. But the eMac offers a lot of ?bang for the buck?: A fast G4 processor, a crisp 17? screen, a CDRW - all at a much lower street price.

The choice is clear: If you may need to add PCI cards - such as video grabbers, MIDI or DSP processor cards, SCSI cards and such - this is not for you.

On the other hand, If you do not want a DVD player or recorder on your Mac (Note that you can still burn VCDs on a CDRW that will play in many DVD players), only need the provided USB and Firewire ports (it helps here not to have costly legacy hardware to replace or support), or if you are just looking for an affordable solution to do a bit of office work and browse the ?net, the eMac offers an extremely good value.

Apple is fading out the CRT Macs, slowly but surely. This baby should last you quite a few years, at the same price than a used, slower G4 tower would cost. If tempted, make sure to act before they are no longer available.
