ROCK SOLID MAC
Pros
EASY SET UP, BANG FOR YOUR BUCK!
Cons
SLIGHT LEARNING CURVE
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
A slight learning curve from macos 8.x but extraordinary power equals more bang for your buck!
I bought the 700mhz eMac from CompUSA after I spent about a day playing with the display unit. I liked the iMacs and the other G4's but the eMac just made more sense. Practical, compact and easy to use.
I found it a 100x easier to install RAM than the Indigo iMac my wife has. It's got 5 USB ports and 2 Firewire ports; more than i'll ever need. No Zip Drive? No problem. I got a crossover ethernet cable for $20 at Radio Shack and networked it p2p (peer to peer) to my old Beige G3 and shared files like that. I just went to the GO menu on the desktop, clicked Connect to Server and I was in after I set up an account.
I had to catch up on the new OSX since I've been working in 8.5 for a long time now. So I've been experimenting for a while.
Had some buggy issues with iPhoto but fixed that when I upgraded to Jaguar (included in the box). iPhoto still needs some work, but iTunes is amazing. In one week I've ripped my entire collection of cd's to over 44 hours of mp3's on my eMac.
True, there's no space in the case to really expand but that's what USB and Firewire are for.
For the price, I'm very happy with this mac. It's the least expensive mac I've ever bought and exponentially the most powerful! Plus, we got a free Epson printer out of it (after rebate).
I was making qt movies and slideshows in hours!
The UNIX interface is fun but I'm still learning how to do permissions for multiple users. If you don't bother with the UNIX terminal you won't even notice it's there!
Make the switch!
