An excellent G4 Macintosh!!!!!

Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
If you want a eMac, snatch up one fast! No longer being sold to consumers :-(
Let me start off by saying I have never been happier with a computer. Not only is my eMac fast and fun to use, it looks great while doing! Apple has loaded this computer with plenty of excellent and easy to use software (Mac OS X Panther, iLife '04, 2 Games). Now with Mac OS X Tiger and the new iLife '06, the computer is even more pleasing to use.
PowerPC G4
The end of the PowerPC G4 and G5 is on the horizon. Apple announced last June they were introducing Intel processors into the next generation of Mac products. This disappointed many Mac fans, but was also a great roadmap for the future. The 1.25GHz PowerPC G4 in my eMac is plenty fast for games, web browsing, e-mail, music, managing photos, and even some mild video editing. Since purchasing this computer in October 2004, I have put this eMac through its paces and let me tell you it hasn't slowed down; not one single time. I have really enjoyed all the power my eMac offers. Heck it even rivals my HP laptops AMD Athlon XP-M 1.67GHz processor. Unfortunately, my eMac is no match for my families 2.8GHz Dell Dimension.
Software
When purchased in October 2004, my eMac came with Mac OS X 10.3.4 Panther and iLife '04. Since then I have upgraded to Mac OS X Tiger and iLife '06. Once again, the machine breezes though everything I throw at it. I can surf web pages using Safari, listen to my favorite music in iTunes, and edit photos in iPhoto; all at the same time!! OS X was the reason I switched over to Mac and it was definetly worth it! Having used Mac OS 7, 8, and 9 in the past, I can tell you that any version of OS X blows the Classic OS out of the water. Tiger includes some really great new features over Panther (Dashboard, Spotlight, Automator, and a great speed increase!) I mean the Mac platform is so much easier to use than any Windows XP box I have ever used. No worrying about spyware, viruses (for the most part), and you never have to reformat your Mac because of slowdowns. The only negative part about owning a Mac is the tiny selection of games. I used to mainly play Need for Speed games with my HP laptop and that was it. Now, I'm editing photos, making iMovies, and creating new webpages all on my eMac!
Design
I will be the first one to tell you that the eMac is not the prettiest Mac in the world. Compared to the iMac, iBook, and MacBook Pro designs, the eMac is like the ugly stepchild of the Mac family. However by no means does that change my mind about the design of the eMac. The eMac has a design that in my opinion is very sexy and unique. A CRT with all the innards of a regular tower built into one solid design. This is not an easy task to accomplish, but every time Apple pulls it off with success! Also included in the design is a pair of 16-watt Stereo speakers. These speakers are ok for casual listening, but for head banging sound you need to pick up some JBL Creatures or Harmon Kardon Soundsticks! Then you'll really be rockin the house!
Monitor
The eMac includes a 17" Flat CRT Monitor. This monitor has excellent color, picture, and is plenty large for e-mail and web browsing. As a matter of fact, the eMac has the best CRT of any computer on the market. Period. I have never seen such a bright CRT from any manufacturer of computers. The monitor runs at 5 resolutions (1280x960, 1152x864, 1024x768, 800x600, and 640x480). I run the monitor at 1152x764 and it is crystal clear and has never had any flicker. I wish I knew what company made the eMac display, because I would send them a box of chocolates and some wine.
Graphics
One of the downsides to the eMac (and the whole Mac platform)is gaming. Included with my eMac is a ATI Radeon 9200 with 32MB of dedicated graphics memory. This is an average processor designed for very basic game play. I would not recommend getting any eMac to play games on, because you will be disappointed. The graphics processor also does not support Core Image (a feature in Tiger that helps speed up graphics) and that translates into a performance hit for certain features of Tiger (Dashboard being the main one). Also, now that Apple no longer makes any G4-equipped computers, newer games that come out will most likely only support the Intel and G5 processors. This is unfortunate for all us G4 users out there!
Conclusion
In conclusion, I love my eMac to death! It has been an excellent computer since purchase. I have never had one single problem with my eMac! If you want to purchase one of these babies, you better act quick. Apple has stopped selling them to consumers, and they are now only available for education. I believe Apple will soon stop selling the eMac. What a horrible day that will be!
After a year and a half of use, the eMac is starting to show age. It just doesn't have that quickness it used to have when it was brand new. I plan on upgrading to a new MacBook or iMac Core Duo within the next couple of months. Hopefully that computer will be as reliable as my eMac has been.
