The Bottom Line:
If you just do data entry and email, buy a PC and back up everything frequently. If you want a computer that does more, invest in an Apple.
I am a die hard Mac fan. I have had better experiences with Macs than with any other computer. I am sure that Windows fans say the same for their PCs, but Apples ease of use and stable platform (not to mention the lack of problems with viruses) are all things that draw me to Apple.
When I packed up and moved to Texas, I got an Apple laptop to go with me. Since I knew this was going to be the last computer I got for several years, I vamped it up with several options. I expanded the memory, invested in the Superdrive, and went for the highest processor speed available at the time. I have not been disappointed. This Apple has been rock solid and reliable since day one. The interface is easy to use, and who doesn't love Apple software? iTunes, anyone?
One of the biggest complaints I have heard about Apple is that they are overpriced. My response is that you get what you pay for. When I paid for an Apple, I got a computer that did more than word process and send email. Apple is the leader in digital images, both for pictures and movie. iMovie is easily the most user friendly home video program out there, and iDVD helps make it look more professional. Obviously, if you are going to be doing anything advanced with your movie editing, you want to be using Final Cut or something similar, but iMovie is the best free movie editing program out there. My Apple makes it easy to take footage or stills, make it into something presentable, and burn it onto a DVD. THAT is part of what I paid for beyond a $700 Windows based laptop that plays solitaire.
And what PC person hasn't cried about viruses? In the 15 years I have used a Mac, I have never had a virus. This Apple laptop has been no exception. While I am sure that there are viruses for the Mac, I have not had any on my laptop. I don't run virus software, and I never worry about spyware. It's simple and easy.
As much as I do love my Mac, there are a couple of things that I would change about it. First, I am afraid to close the screen too much. I can see the key imprints in the dust on the screen, and I am sure that it must do some damage to my screen over time. This can be prevented by using the small slip of foam that shipped with the computer to put between the screen and keyboard when I close the laptop, but it is inconvenient. Second, I wish the battery life was a little longer. My room mate gets upwards of 3 hours battery life with her iMac, while I often only get two. Lastly, it can be a little quirky about the sleep mode. If it is inactive for long enough and goes to sleep, I need to give it several seconds after the screen goes blank before I try to wake it up. If I wake it up the moment after the screen goes blank, it will often freeze and need to be restarted.
However, for slimline portability and a machine that is much more than a wordprocessor, this is my top of the line choice. The programs are all easy to use, Apple's support is world class, and the wide variety of innovative Apple products to go with the laptop make it well worth the cost and FAR outweigh the minor problems that come with this computer.
