The Bottom Line:
If internet security is a high concern for a user, then buy a Mac. Otherwise, stick with Windows.
I have been a Windows user since computers started to come out with Windows (I started using DOS based computers since high school). I needed a new laptop after my thinkpad died. I bought a Powerbook due to it's reputation and because I had a great experience with apple computers back in college, crunching data.
I have owned a Mac for 3 months now and I CAN NOT recommend it to anyone who is not a previous mac owner. There are many compatibility issues that no one warned me about. First of all, I can't pay some of my bills online because the website is not compatible with macs. I can't open certain types of video files or play certain types music files. Some internet/web features do not open or can't function in a mac environment. As a Mac owner, it seems I have to stick with only products that are made by Apple corp. This severely limits access to things that I had access to before. Previous Windows users may find this aspect as frustrating as I do.
Second, I have the same experience as the previous reviewer, regarding the battery. The battery and the Mac do not get along. The laptop gets SO hot that it makes me sweat when I'm working. Also, the casing is not good. When the battery is fully charged, I feel electrical shocks on my wrists and fingers. Because the casing is not good, the trackpad does not function consistently.
I am trying to get the casing fixed but the technicians will not give me a time frame as to when I can expect the laptop back. They only suggest that I buy the ProCare service for $99 then I will get my laptop fixed and returned to me within 48 hours. Otherwise, it depends on how busy they are and they can't guarantee anything.
I do everything on my computer. I have explained this to the techs. After only 3 months for a brand new machine that costs close to $3000, their response is unacceptable. For now, I simply do not fully charge.
Third, many productivity software is not included in the cost of the machine. Buying a windows based laptop would have cost much less and the computer would have included many more software. No word processing type of software was included with the machine. I had to buy MS Office separately. This does not include MS ACCESS, since ACCESS is incompatibel with the Mac. I have to buy File Maker, a database program similar to ACCESS, separately.
Don't get me wrong, there are good things about the PowerBook. Installing and removing software is very simple. No more defragmenting; no more trojan viruses or worms.
If I could go back in time, I would buy another Windows based machine. It seems all computers have their problems but PC's are less expensive. Believe it or not, the ease of use is something that has to be learned. Being used to Windows, I had to unlearn some of the commands that I've used since I was 16. And I think that Windows XP has caught up with the Mac OS in terms of ease of use.
