Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
If you are not a small person like me, this is a powerful machine to be around. It's a jewel for its looks, screen resolution, user-friendliness, and good design
This computer was bought for school work for my professor. I'm one of the user, so I'm writing a review on behalf of her.
The specifications are:
1.5GHz Power PC G4
1GB memory
80GB
15" screen
2 USB ports (one on the left and another on the right)
1 fire wire, bluetooth connection
DVD-R, CD-RW
Mac OS x 10.3.3
weights 5.7 lb
The computer was purchased through educational discount from apple.com, and it was $2749.
Overall comment
I love mac for its ease of use and pictorial representation. The visual effect is enhanced even more because of the matte screen, which you can view at any angles and don't get glare like non-mac computers. 15 inch screen is really big. It's feels bigger than the conventional 15 inch because of rectangular shape. It has a panoramic view effect. It's as good as it gets for laptop with a reasonable weight, in my opinion. I personally would not buy this laptop because it's a bit too heavy to carry around. It's great for desktop replacement, but I would not want to carry this everyday. There's two visible USB connections, one on each side. It a wise design considering that my professor is left handed and I am right handed. This prevents the laptop to be surrounded by wires going different directions.
Operating System OS X "panther"
OS X 10.3 or OS X has made computing much easier in every way, you think of something you want to do, say, you want to watch a DVD, you then you click on iDVD, and the computer will guide you. Most things you want to do is on the scroll, if not, sherlock can easily find an application or a document you are looking for.
DVD-R and CD-RW
This laptop has a slot loading design, which means that the a CD or DVD gets sucked into the optical drive. I think this is a better way to keep any accidental damage from happening. It also give me a nostalgic feeling of going back to the old imac system with slot loading, but it's much much more powerful than that. I did listen to a music. The rotation of CD was so loud I did not enjoy listening to the music. I would need a headphone that can shunt the background noise. I also burnt a document CD. The procedure is simple. Just double click the CD icon to open its folder and drag stuff that you want to burn. Then click on the sign burn that reminds me of radioactivity warning sign. It took a few minutes for 250MB of information, then the CD icon disappeared. I didn't know what had happened, so I restarted. The CD was there and all documents were there. pyuhhh...
Battery life
With full charing, the battery can last for 2.5 hrs. That is a bit short time. The recent PC for non-mac with intel M centrino allows battery to last for 3+ hrs. My toshiba tecra M2 lasts for 4 hrs.
