Hot computer
Pros
Beautiful. Fun. Fast. Wonderful customer support on phone and in store
Cons
Cannot be placed on the lap. Heats up to dangerous levels.Compatibility, pricey.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Highly recommended. For those who aren't in a rush. Wait till they fix the heating problem, probably only on their next module.
This review is written by an avid PC user, who just bought his first Mac ever.
I loved PC's and was tempted to buy a Mac after experiencing horrible customer service by Dell.
I said to myself, let's give those guys a chance.
Yes. Advertising works.
Also, the Mac's look so cool, how could I not give them a chance?
I said to myself, if I hate the Mac OSX, I'll just put Windows XP on it, and won't have to deal with it as a Mac, it'll be a pure PC machine, now that they've moved to the Intel platform.
Well, I've had this computer for a few weeks, and I still haven't put on it the Windows XP I was planning to.
The Mac OSX is a lot of fun.
It takes some adjusting to. Seems like everything is placed in a different place, and they do have their own logic in everything.
For anyone who's ever driven a rented car in Europe. It feels like a Citroen.
Has all the needed functions, but all of them placed in a totally different place than one's used to.
That said, this computer is growing on me. It does seem to have a very unique character, and also a lot of cool items in it.
I used to have a computer only for work. Now, I'm finding myself taking more and more time to play with their various free software. With their widgets and with other stuff, I'm slowly finding on my own, hidden inside this ultra heavy toy.
Also, everything seems to look so much more aesthetic. Most of my work is on a computer, and it seems that all the programs, even Windows Office looks better on it.
The .mac is a very cool thing. It back up my hard drive daily to the web automatically.I've wasted many man hours redoing things that were destroyed when previous computers crashed and I was too busy to back them up or just ran out of CD/DVD's and promised myself that "tomorrow I'll go to Staples"....
The 1GB on the web back up is really smart. Like many other things Apple has, you discover they have all the most trivial things, one doesn't understand how nobody thought of it before.
I am slowly starting to like this computer, even thought it's so different.
My complaints.
1. It heats up to levels, that are dangerous. I've never seen a computer heat up to such levels. I feel it's only a matter of time before some of these computers will start fires in houses.
2. The mousepad only has one button. Yes. I get that it's cool and different. But it's simply not practical for the millions of users who are used to two buttons and all the additional functions that come with it.
3. Some websites don't work that well with Mac OSX . It's good to have either Windows XP on the computer or have an additional computer with Windows on it.
4. In my experience, Hebrew programs and web pages don't load up properly. There's lots of languages, so If anyone needs additional languages, I would suggest checking this out before purchasing. Seems like English is the main focus on this computer.
5. As the logic of this operating system is different from Windows, it needs learning, and either having a friend who has Apple for a long time, or expect to sit for many hours figuring a lot of things out by oneself.
6. Don't bother sending Word documents to Windows users. There are compatibility issues and there's almost always something wrong, when they try to open it.
7. The computer comes with a 5400 RPM harddrive. to get the 7200 RPM costs an additional $200
8. It is extremely heavy. I mean HEAVY. So if you're looking for something lite. Buy a Vaio.
My conclusion :
A very cool and trendy machine with a lot of pros and a lot of unique and helpful items.
Unlike all my PC's which were ugly- this is a beautiful machine, that is so hip, it almost doesn't feel like a computer.
Very pricey. Heats up to dangerous levels, and needs getting used to by PC users.
I would recommend Apple finds a solution to the heating problem. It's dangerous, and is dangerous to put on one's lap. One doesn't need a computer that runs the risk of burning anything it comes in contact with.
I wanted to check about the heating problem and called the Apple support and they were extremely helpful on the phone.
(But couldn't really solve this apperrently known issue)
I went once to the store with my computer as I couldn't figure out something in the manual and it seemed that as busy as the store was, everyone working there wanted to help me.
After the horrible Dell customer support I never got used to, this was shocking. EVERYONE wanted to help. Just for the sake of helping.
I was so impressed.
I've become a convert.
