Lovin' my laptop
Pros
Fast, reliable, adorable, never crashes, long battery life
Cons
gets hot after about an hour, but cools down quickly
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Fast processor, flawless operation, never crashes, low maintenance -- everything I wanted and more.
I've had my Apple PowerbookPC G4 notebook for a year now. It arrived the afternoon before I was supposed to leave for a conference and we set it up in the airport at LAX. When we arrived in Zurich and turned it on, everything worked perfectly and it's continued to do so. Mac OS X is a dream...updates itself, not prone to viruses, and never crashes.
Functionality
I've had as many as 8 applications running at a time -- including memory hogs like iMovie & Photoshop -- and my laptop did not slow down, freeze, or crash. When I first tried to download a movie from my camcorder, the set-up was easy: iMovie launched and basically walked me through the process.
The CD burning process is the only part of using my Mac that I've found complicated. It is different than PCs and older Mac versions. It involves the usual steps -- launching the blank CD and choosing to burn it, selecting the files to place on the CD, and burning it -- but is not as intuitive or straightforward as other programs I've used.
I replaced my G3 tower with this laptop, so I use it every day hooked up to a 17-inch flat screen. My daily use includes word processing, Internet use, importing and editing photos, and uploading images to websites. Mac OS X makes all of this easy and the laptop never slows me down.
The System Preferences are easy to modify. With Macs, everything is easy to change and track down. I was happily surprised that Mac OS X did not have a steep learning curve, but instead delivered the ease of use I had enjoyed in previous versions.
Essentials
The battery lasts a while...at least 4 hours, unless you're watching a DVD, and then about 3. I've dropped it, bumped it against walls, moved it around a lot and it looks new and functions perfectly.
It's heavier than I expected, but still lightweight. It's small enough to fit in a notebook holder, so I carry it in that or a backpack instead of a laptop case.
The keyboard works well and the mousepad is sensitive enough that it always works the first time. I like that the screen tilts back, past a 90 degree angle, so that I can use it virtually anywhere (the LCD screen isn't the best in direct sunlight, so despite the commercials, beach use isn't practical).
I love this computer because I never have to worry about it. It works every time.
