Macbook White (Jan 2009)
Pros
Solid machine, established tech.Speedy NVidia graphics adapter.Firewire Port
Cons
White polycarb shows dirt.Non multitouch trackpad.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Buy this if you want the best value Macbook.
This Macbook is an upgrade to the previous white polycarb revision which had the Intel GMA950 graphics adapter. This upgrade has the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M adapter instead which provides superior graphics performance and preps the platform for using Snow Leopard's (10.6) abilities which the Intel GMA will probably not support. Otherwise the machine is nearly identical. The only other minor difference is a slight drop in processor speed from 2.1GHz to 2.0Ghz.
The white polycarbonate casing is identical to its predecessors and it most critically still has a Firewire 400 port which its Aluminium brothers lack.
The machine is solid and well made and the only minor niggle is a very slight looseness between the upper and lower casing when the screen is closed. But this is coming from the perspective of previously owning a Powerbook 12".
Unlike its aluminum macbook brothers the trackpad is not multi-touch but it does have a physical mouse button which some people may like.
The keyboard is not backlit but it has a pleasant feel and can be used for extended typing and coding sessions.
The screen comes only in glossy but I have never noticed any glare or any difference from the matte screen on my desk. The mini-DVI interface works well with my 20" screen however I have to be wary that the computer has gone fully to sleep when i go from sitting the couch mode before going to plugged in clam-shell mode other wise the machine gets a bit confused and has to be force rebooted. This might be a peculiarity of the ADC-DVI adapter which i use with my old cinema display.
Battery life is good, I get at least 3 hours use even if watching video.
The graphics response is snappy and the fans only kick in when playing games. Im not a FPS player but graphics heavy puzzle type games such as "World of Goo" and "Plants vs Zombies" play very well without glitches and pauses.
XCode use is fast and compilation of large projects rapid.
This is a good machine for those who don't want to shell out for an aluminum macbook or who still need a firewire port. Maxed out at 4GB of RAM ( dont believe the hype Apple supplied RAM is not significantly more expensive than 3rd party RAM ) the machine came in at about £850 from the Apple store.
