My office, recording studio and darkroom in one little notebook
Pros
portable, versatile, easy to maintain
Cons
power supply cord could be better.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
This machine is powerful and versatile. I highly recommend it.
I put off buying this machine for as long as I could – I have a titanium Mac Powerbook that I'd been using for quite a while, but after almost 5 years of traveling back and forth between different offices and home and anywhere else I happen to visit, it was time.
That said, I sometimes wonder why I waited so long. The 17" screen is wonderful for desktop publishing, allowing you to see 2 full pages side by side, so you can check your layouts. The pre-installed software – the iLife package – is fun and versatile. My music students love recording their own music with the GarageBand software, and combined with the MIDI controller by M-AUDIO, the iMic and a decent omni-directional mic, I have a recording studio that goes where I go. The web browser (Safari) and the Mail programs are easy to use, and I prefer the iChat application over AOL Instant Messenger. With the installed webcam, I can engage in a video conference without having to fret over techie issues.
Since I'm almost always doing more than one thing at a time, I usually have 10 applications running simultaneously, and this processor has no problem with it.
I chose a laptop over a desktop because health issues. I can work in bed, if I have to, when using this machine and a wireless internet connection. This was probably the most important factor in my buying decision.
If I have anything to complain about, it would be the power cable. It's a bit too fragile for someone who travels with their machine.
