I've been an Apple fan ever since I first started programming an Appe IIc when I was 8. I lately became an investor and when MacWorld came out and knowing the behavior of Steve Jobs, I invested in Apple (thinking they had something up their sleeves). I was somewhat dissapointed like many other people, but I do have a theory behind why Steve Jobs came up with the Cube.
Why Bring out A Cube?
My belief is that Apple is setting up for a leading phsycology. The G4 Cube is not about now, it is about the future. Net Appliances are supposed to be growing bigger (god only knows why, they've been around for decades). Well imagine a Silent Cube sitting beside a TV, or anywhere in the home. It controlling everything around you. Yes I realise X-10 home automation has been around for a long time, but I'm not talking about home automation. Computers up until now have been limited to being put close to phone lines, cable connections etc. But the Industry is moving away from this, look at Wireless. That's where Apple's going in my opinion.
All about Psychology
It's all about the Psychology, it was about psychology with the iMac and look how well it did. What really was so different about the iMac? It's looks. The G4 Cube is just another deeper psychology that right now is hard to see. But I do believe that the G4 Cube is only the first step in Apple's move towards the psychology of being wireless and in control.
Wireless and in Control
Wireless is the wave of the future. Cell Phones will most likely crush Land Line Phones, when it becomes cheap enough. Computers are the ultimate "in control" system today, what else gives you that feeling?
But we are still limited to the most basic factors, Electricity, Phone Line or Cable Connections. Generally these are still not Wireless, yet the industry is so close to breaking this idea.
The G4 Cube is the perfect solution for this new age psychology. Compact and Silent perfect to put in any place in the house. Controlling more then we can possibly imagine, all wireless.
Future Based Product
So remember, it may not seem like much today, but knowing Apple, I'm sure there's an ellaborate plan to the G4 Cube. Products and Software should soon be coming out to help us decifer the true reasons behind it soon enough. Maybe I'm a little optimistic of Steve Jobs, but I do believe there's a deeper reason the just the Cube.
