Still going strong!
Pros
Reliable Workhorse
Cons
A little loud
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
A system that is still going strong after nearly 30,000 hours of operation.
The computer in question is an original 400MHz/20gig/128 ram/DVD/Zip machine.
I bought this computer in the beginning of 2000. It has now been almost three and a half years during which the computer has been running almost 24/7, and I haven't had a single problem. The original hard drive has never had a failure, and the computer still runs quickly and at a decent temperature.
I've upgraded it with an 80 gig disk (easy to install in the case) and upped the RAM to 1.12 gigs, and replaced the video card with a Radeon 8500, but left the rest stock with absolutely no problems. The system runs the newest software easily.
There were slight troubles, though. The fan in the original ATI Rage 128 went bad, making a nice whirring noise. That was fixed when the Radeon replaced it in anticipation of Quartz Extreme. The power supply fan is also quite loud on a high-pitched scale. A lot of people don't notice it, but my ears are attenuated to it and pick it up rather easily, causing headaches after a while.
Other than that, the system itself has been rock solid with nary a flaw.
Love it and highly recommend it.
