Nice, nice very nice

Pros Fast, beautiful (outside and in), easy to set-up and operate. C-O-O-O-L
Cons Irritating fan noise. Expensive
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  It is easy to use. Everything works and it looks fabulous (especially with the 17" LCD display). Why WOULDN'T you want to own one of these?
I expected great things from this new dual-processor Mac, and it delivers on just about every count. It is, of course, a beautifully designed piece of hardware that wants to be put on display, not tucked away under a desk. But that doesn't really matter as much as performance. Luckily this machine is no slouch in the processing department.

It is powered by two 867 Mhz G4 PowerPC chips each one of which, for reasons that are too arcane to worry about, are as powerful as a Wintel box running at much higher clock speeds. In addition, Apple's latest OS X is designed to do a number of things better than any other consumer operating system, and taking advantage of multiple processors is one of them. It took me a little while to get used to OS X, and the initial releases were painfully slow on my 2 early generation iMacs, but the latest release (10.2.1) sings. It has worked flawlessly since I took the machine out of the box 2 weeks ago.

The Apple supplied software makes it a snap to burn MP3's onto CD, so much so that I only needed to watch my 11 year old son burn his first CD to be confident that this is a task that he can handle on his own.

I set up multiple accounts so that each family member can log on to the a private area of the machine and keep their mail, web favourites and documents separate and secure. This, too, has worked like a charm.

Networking was a snap, too and I could easily connect to the hard drives of my other 2 Macs (through an ethernet hub) and also the remote computer that contains the files for my website (it shows up in the Mac directory just like any other hard drive).

Is it perfect? No. The dual processors throw off a lot of heat and the cooling fans create a high-pitched whine that can be a bit irritating. And even with the dual 867's, I find that some manipulating graphics files can take a few seconds longer that I would like.

But these are small nit-picks. It's a great machine.
