This review is for the G4 for VIDEO editing (mostly)

The Bottom Line:
For video editing, this machine will make your job as easy as possible.
We got some new G4s at school awhile back and they are great. Not only do the out perform the G3s in speed and all-around greatness, they look cool with their silvery colors! The G3s are all greenish . . . . I looked at those for too long.
We had MAC OS 9 on our G4s but it took us forever to upgrade to MAC OS 10 because the computers kept screwing up. We upraded our G3s to MAC OS 10 and one of the hard drives didn't show up on each, so we had to down-grade to MAC OS 9 again . . . . I'd watch for that if you have/want a G3.
Our MACs are strictly for video editing and anything we need to do therein, like image editing. We use Final Cut Pro and we recently upgraded to the newest version which seems to be compatible with Mac OS 10 on the G4s. Final Cut Pro is a more complex way of video editing, as opposed to the easy-to-use alternate editing program (for the first year video class students) known as imovie.
Final Cut Pro (Includes Tutorial Disc)
Cut clips and audio any way you want. Add detailed effects to your audio/video to "wow" your friends. The audio volume levels can be changed as well as the speed of your video clips. The video class teacher states that, "if you see a commercial or music video on TV, Final Cut Pro can do it." He made it a point for us to challenge him on the subject.
i - Movie (Includes Tutorial Disc)
An easy-to-use video editing system for home movies or anything you want! A simple timeline shows your clips in order with the audio bars underneath, all ready for editing. Effects can be applied with greater ease that Final Cut Pro, but imovie can't do virtually everything like Final Cut Pro can.

so i will try to remember and recreate what i had said:
The firewire from the G4 can be connected to your camera or an edit deck for exporting your edited videos. We use miniDV cameras and edit decks to keep up with the ever growing technology of video. An edit deck has a VHS port for your final video print and another port for the tape of your choice, we have an 8MM deck but most of ours are for miniDV.
Programs like itunes and internet explorer/netscape can open up your G4 to a world of possibilities.
Mac OS 10 just introduced something like a start-bar at the bottom center of the screen. It can be manipulated to show the programs you use most. It also houses the sherlock search and the trash can. The top right corner still houses the hard drives as did the G3. The icons have been given a more 3-D look, same as the backround, to give the user more of a high-tech feel. So that that user can know, this G4 will never let him down.
Apple tech support is actually pretty good. They will help you with problems and get your parts fixed quickly and easily for you . . . as long as you are still within the time of tech support/warranty . . . after that . . . you are on your own.
