Although I would hardly consider myself an computer expert, I would, as your everyday consumer, have to say that I have made a good purchase. The Macintosh Powerbook G3, is a fast (by laptop standards) 233 - 300+ MHz, depending on how much you want to spend. It is a sleek jet-black which gives it sort of a classy look -- appropriate for the typical business exec. The downside of this, however, is that the black shows dust and dirt rather blatantly. As far as the actual physical feel of the laptop, it has a rubber texture which ensures good grip when carrying, so as to not accidentally drop it.
My particular Powerbook has a 14" screen which is extremely clear. By laptop standards, this is a very big screen. But, as with all things, you pay for it. Although I cannot remember the exact figures, I would assume that it added $500 or so to my price tag.
As for overall characteristics, the computer is surprisingly quiet, with only a low hum when it's on. The size is fairly slim. 1-1/2" in thickness, I believe. The keyboard is appropriately sized -- not to small, as some laptops' keyboards are. The easy slide out mechanisms for the battery/cd-rom/disk drive are convenient. And you can pop all of the above out, at any time the computer is idle, with just the flip of a lever.
To my annoyance, however, the CD-ROM drive which I purchased with my machine, a 6X speed, is extremely loud. I don't know if they are any substitutes other than purchasing an external drive, but one should really check into it before finalizing your decision to buy. Also, on that note, the Powerbook, is somewhat heavy. I would estimate 10+ pounds. While, this is a rough estimate, I can definitely say that it is somewhat uncomfortable and somewhat a strain to the forearm to pick up and move around with only one hand. Despite these flaws, I am a satisfied customer. I think the laptop is well-built and durable anda great product. The only final factor I would consider is the hefty price tag.
