The G4 Genius of PowerBook...A Must-Have!

Pros Lightweight, powerful, very quiet...greatly improved heat discharge
Cons Wish that the Superdrive was standard equipment...
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  It's a greatly improved, efficient little laptop--packed with useful functions and great portability!
I go back a LONG way with Apple computers... in 1985, I was creating information graphics for a major daily newspaper with one of the first Macs ever made!

As time and my career progressed, I had to incorporate PCs into my repertoire, too; the result being that I learned to appreciate both platforms for their unique properties--and I developed a balanced outlook regarding the strengths and weaknesses of each one.
However, I now believe that moving from a desktop computer to a laptop is really a bigger transition than moving between platforms.

My first experience with a PowerBook was in 2000, and I admit that it was somewhat frustrating. I incurred multiple system crashes and the heat generated by the laptop was so intense that I could not tolerate holding it on my lap at all! It was noisy, too. Moving between applications was slow and inelegant. The portability of the laptop seemed to be the only real benefit...

Flash forward to 2003, and my new PowerBook G4. What a difference a couple of years makes in "Tech-Land!" One aspect of this laptop that could have been difficult, but isn't, is the ability to switch back and forth between OS9 (Classic Mode) and OS X.
I was concerned, initially, that I would have to invest in totally new software due to OSX changes--but including the System 9 functionality was a stroke of genius...Adobe Systems came to the rescue with several 30-day free tryout versions of major programs that I can test before I purchase them. All are running seamlessly on OSX.

The 15.2 inch LCD screen resolution is crisp and clear, and the USB ports for peripherals are clearly marked, user-friendly, and a snap to use. I love the plug & play technology...I've had no problem downloading photos from my Panasonic digital camera (see my review) or hooking up my HP 6110 All-In-One printer (see my review), copier, fax and scanner. These few tools have already paid for themselves in just 3 months...seriously.

In the interest of saving about $499, I chose the Combo Drive over the SuperDrive model...which was a mistake! I ended up needing
to uninstall a lot of non-essential software the first time I wanted to burn a C-D, since I had used up more memory than I realized--and there was not enough to burn the C-D...also, I am missing out on the DVD-burning capabilities due to my choice...which I paln to make up for by purchasing a state-of-the-art Desktop system in August...

All in all, I am quite happy with my PowerBook G4 purchase and I'd buy it again, without reservation!
